I’d promise to live-blog the GOP debate tonight but, honestly, I’ll probably watch five or six minutes, feel physically ill, and see what’s on Netflix.

Not to pick, but this version of the Star-Spangled Banner couldn’t be worse if it were sung to honor the Stars & Bars.
The Guardian GOP Liveblog
It could happen. Most interesting moment, to me (emphasis):
Guessing that VP also fulfils Cruz’s barely concealed motive of making the entire GOP legislative conference his bitch. Think Dick Nixon; I always do with Cruz, they are birds of a feather.
This from back in November:
Oh, really? If so the pair of them could probably stroll to the convention on the basis of that understanding.
The economy is…IRAN! -Ted Cruz
The economy would be no better than Iran’s once Cruz got done with it.
2 for 2- Kasich, how would you handle a financial collapse?
Uh, let me tell you how to create economic growth instead.
Deregulation, tax cuts, and austerity. The GOP mantra.
But, the mantra has a real life example….Flint.
Christie, when should you bomb the shit out of a world on fire?
Christie- argle bargle.
Give the man a break — Cruz already started a war over captured sailors that were released.
And won it too!
With the dumb asses in the audience anyway.
Carson channeling Santorum — a loser.
Nicely illustrated in a gif at foxtrot alpha. Very creepy as it should be.
I want more discussion of Cruz’s status as a natural born citizen.
Me too. But Cruz shut them down with his “I’ve lived the Constitution my whole life — so there!”
Carpentier at The Guardian:
Bush doesn’t belong there.
And his 100M super-PAC has become a penitent’s cross. So the arc of history bends, slightly, toward the yearning for public humiliation of the Bush crime family and their total ostracism from public life. A tarnished brand.
Yeah, that’s one silver lining out this insane fustercluck. At this point, I’ll take what I can get. If it takes Jeb?? finally tarnishing the turd brand of the Bush Crime Syndicate, so be it. Shoulda happened with W, but better late than never!
Flunked out of Stupid School.
Can’t watch any more.
Rubio: I’m sure Obama would take away all guns if he could. (Makes same statement as to 2nd amendment.)
This is why you can’t talk to a winger. They are fed and believe this bullshit.
I would love to see this follow up question: “Now, do you actually believe that nonsense or are you just pandering to the base?”
You could use it so often – why hasn’t one just one media person challenged these unhinged statements? We live in a world of spineless cowards. I am so sick of it.
Really, I would not be surprised. Isn’t that true of most here? Even I see an appeal with the proviso “If it could be done”.
Kasich invoked the name of his good friend Strom Thurmond and got a round of applause. Did the audience forget to wear their white hoods tonight?
Real good one!
No, they didn’t forget to wear their white hoods. They got their memo to avoid wearing the white hoods as being too Captain Obvious.
However, as I gaze into my crystal ball, I foresee that at the 2020 POTUS folderol, the GOP base will begin proudly and loudly wearing the white hoods because they’re damn sick and tired of dirty dastardly LIEbrul “political correctness.”
I said it here first…. (sadly).
Oh, I thought 2016 was the year of no more PC for the rightwing folks. Guess they’ll let the sheets, hoods, and burning crosses slide for another four years.
Christie wants the no fly zone. Plus Hillary is enemy number one. After Obama and whatever.
So does Crisco advocate a No Fly zone over the Clinton mansion? Or whut??
Ben Carson: “civilians? We’re worried about civilians? Give me a break! Bomb dem mofos!”
I can’t listen to any,ore of this,shit.
Works better to read the live blogs and every so often tune into whoever is talking. That avoids having to listen to all of them saying the same dumb thing in his own “special” way.
Really good advice, should be a public health announcement.
Trump and Kasich — “I’m a free trade advocate. But with China, I’m for fair trade. Fair free trade whatever that is.
Jennifer Jacobs:
Question? Will a free movie ticket buy a vote?
On to “entitlemenrs” are killing the US economy. In the kiddie debate Huck declared hands off Social Security and Medicare. In the next breath, he’d do away with payroll taxes.
Can’t listen to this segment; will read what others write.
Saved the worst for last — poor misunderstood cops — they wouldn’t shoot if not necessary — they wouldn’t have any trouble enforcing the law if not for sanctuary cities and pot smokers.
A good comment during the kiddie debate:
The Guardian in case the actual “debate” wasn’t terrifying enough:
You can see why Trump is winning this thing. Trump-Cruz 2016. Crikey. I’m not cord-cutting until this is over. What sport!
If the names attached to those closing statements were blacked out, it would be more apparent that all of them were attempting to channel Reagan and they all sound like loons. Trump is winning because none of the other candidates is better than him and the GOP base doesn’t want another loser like Dole, McCain, and Romney shoved down their throats. He’s like the fantasy version of the 2008 Fred Thompson.
Weird how the GOP base hates “Hollywood” but loves GOP candidates out of “Hollywood.” They’re just suckers for celebrities.
I liked Jeb’s desperation by citing “The Citadel”. Knowing where he was, its history, and the recent pictures.
“I’ll fight Hillary Clinton.”
I’d watch him and her nude mud wrestle if it was on pay per view. And I’d bet on her.
Dude, I’m the guy on this site that likes Hillary the most, the loudest and the longest (believe it or not, since 1970).
But Nude Mud Wrestling???
That’s a picture I don’t need in my brain.
If Christie got on top, he’d crush her. Unless she was packing a harpoon.
Thanks for the updates everyone. I couldn’t stand spending my evening that way so I watched mad max fury road instead, on HBO. Its a show about a hell on earth where it’s kill or be killed, and only the most savage can survive.
On second thought maybe I was watching the debates. Was that Trump in that crazy mask? Time for bed.
Rhetoric from men who think they’re men.Do any of these candidates have a spine?
My new insight is that a Cruz presidency is nearly unthinkable based simply on his poor posture and out of shape look.
This is egregious “lookism” but I think defensible on the basis of past history. Romney had great posture, looked presidential. McCain was shorter but had a good bearing. Dukakis suffered in part because HW towered over him. The closest analogue I can think of for Cruz is Nixon, who had something of a stoop, though not as bad as Cruz, and he was taller.
Cruz is 5’8″ with a stoop and a pot belly.
Look at these presidents, all tall with good posture.
Look at Cruz.
Look at him. He just looks soft.
Cruz would need Iran to nuke Houston to be elected president.
Who is tallest? There was that theory too.
Trump is 6’3″, although online sources are very unreliable for heights.
LOOK AT HIM
you ask…
someone on another blog repeatedly says that he has a face for a Criminal Minds episode.
Here’s what I don’t get — look at this picture. Why does the 5’8″ Cruz appear to be the same height as the 6′ Carson? Why does the 5’10” Rubio (who wears heels) appear to be shorter than Cruz? And why does Cruz have such a bow-legged and wide stance?
Carson is standing slightly back, which in a wide angle picture could make a difference. I would assume Cruz is in lifts. I said he’s 5’8″ but celebrity heights are an endless rabbit hole. He’s under 6 that’s for sure.
Would think that if Cruz is taller than 5’8″ that his campaign would correct the record. The reocrd per Fox. (Carson exactly 6′ — of course nothing about the guy checks out.)
From NBC/WSJ Polls on Iowa
01/11/16 01/14/16
Trump 24 33 +9
Cruz 28 20 -13
Rubio 13 13 0
Carson 11 12 +1
Bush 4 5 +1
Paul 5 5 0
Kasich 2 3 +1
Fiorina 3 3 0
Huckabee 2 1 -1*
Christie 3 5 +2*
Santorum 0 0 0*
The winner: TRUMP (obvious)
The Loser: CRUZ (Obvious)
The REAL Losers: RUBIO, PAUL, FIORINA (when a frontrunner drops 13 points and you don’t get any of them … YOU REALLY LOST)
The first numbers are from NBC/WSJ Iowa polling 1/2/16 through 1/7/16. The second set are NBC/WSJ National polling 1/9/16 through 1/13/16.
Other Iowa polls from early in DEC through Jan 12th have all shown Cruz at a minimum of 24% and maximum of 31% (I threw out the 40% as it’s an outlier). The average for Cruz in January is 27%.
The same pattern during the same period is seen for Cruz nationally. Although in Oct nationally his baseline was lower than in IA and his increases aren’t as large, but he’s been holding steady at 18-20% for the past month. Same pattern in NH and SC. Thus, if he’s slipping, he hasn’t shown up in the polls (which are always several days to a couple of weeks behind public sentiment.
You’re right.
I swear, my glasses are making me stupid.
I missed the debate entirely. This was a sanity-saving way to absorb its hateful stupidity. Thanks for the laughs and the insights, Frog Pond.
