My father is dead. He was a big disappointment as a father. I’ll wrestle him in the afterlife, and will continue to wrestle with his effect on my life in therapy.
My dad and I like each other, so the feats of strength aren’t our focus. Dad put up a pole this year (I am NOT making that up) and we have aired our grievances, most of which are about other people.
Got pretty lucky too as far as dads go. I gave him plenty of fits growing up, but we generally had a good relationship and we enjoy each other’s company now. I am thankful for that. My dad is not one to celebrate Festivus, but when we do visit again in a few days, I can count in having a good time. As time continues to slip by, I am aware of how few moments are likely left to share, so each one is savored.
I’m going to break from the grievance-airing for a moment to wish the Frog Pond denizens a happy holiday season and extend hopes for the new year. Who knows what may lie ahead, but for now I’m going to share time with family and friends, exchange gifts, eat good food, and put everything negative aside. I hope you all can celebrate in your own ways and enjoy a few days of kindness and cheer.
A Festivus for the rest of us!
My airing of grievances was reserved for the year 2016. Had to give the family a break. Besides, I’m really, really disappointed with 2016!

Grievances!
I don’t know if anyone watches Parts Unknown, but Anthony Bourdain’s Post-Election Interview is worth a look.
Oh my God, that’s a terrific interview! I’ve liked him since he did a Texas border (or maybe Arizona) and went off on deportation.
Couple great quotes from that interview,
I think it was Lenin who said one of my favorite lines: “On the train of the revolution, we will lose the liberals at the first turn.”
and
“He’s going to make the whole world look like the back of Rick James’ van.”
Pure gold.

I have some serious grievances with 2016.
