France’s Macron has campaign emails leaked online one day before election | DW |
French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron’s campaign team said late on Friday that it had been the victim of a “massive and coordinated” hacking attack.
The campaign team said in a statement that internal communications and financial documents had been hacked a few weeks ago and were now being circulated across social media at the 11th hour of one of the most dramatic presidential elections in French history. Whoever was behind the leak had sought to “seed doubt and misinformation” a day before Sunday’s final run-off vote for the French presidency.
The campaign team also said false documents had been mixed with the leaked campaign files.
○ Around 9Gb of leaked data was posted on Pastebin by a user called EMILEAKS
Last month, a cybersecurity firm reported that it had spotted a hacking group, believed to be part of a Russian intelligence unit, targeting Macron and his campaign team through a phishing attack. The security firm, Trend Micro, said it appeared to be the same group behind the hacking of Democratic campaign officials ahead of last year’s US presidential election.
The campaign team also reported back in February that for a few minutes it had lost access to its servers following an attack believed to have originated from Ukraine.
…
France’s interior ministry said it would not comment on the trove of hacked documents as the official campaign had ended. “Neither the ministry, nor any other ministry would be commenting on this because according to the law, campaigning has ended as of midnight,” a spokesman for the ministry said.

Great title: There Are No “Macron Leaks” In France. Politically Motivated Hacking Is Not Wistleblowing

Should also note that Wikileaks made a huge mistake in issuing a comment on this data dump. Too much like idiot politicians that speak before they know what the hell their commenting on.
Absolutely!
Bien Sur or naturellement. The world’s premier evil mastermind. How else could a bozo like Trump beat the most qualified candidate evah?
A copycat hacker. And a copycat response from France’s neoliberal party. Both the cops and robbers seem to be getting dumber (and they weren’t all that swift to begin with).
lol you’re like a creationist responding why evolution isn’t real and using the evidence in favor of evolution twisted around for why it’s not true. “The reason all of the evidence showing these animals are similar isn’t supportive of evolution, but because they had the same creator!”
So since it’s now a declared “copycat” — although right now we do not know who did it — does that mean you accept Russia’s culpability in DNC hacking or no? I’m going to guess “no”.
That’s a nonsensical analogy.
You apparently missed the snark that public data dumps now equal “we was hacked” and if it’s data from a western political campaign or government, “the Russkies done did it.”
Or North Korea
wrt alleged hack of the EM campaign:
Swinkels bit is the “logic” of creationists and Russiaphobes. Critical thinking skeptics consider the entire body of known information, including all of the possible perpetrators and the motives/agendas of those doing the reporting. And we don’t heavily weight after the fact claims without strong supporting evidence. Thus, the anti-Putin/Russia DNC computer consultant that claim the DNC was hacked and hacked by Russia is as suspect as Wikileaks claim that it was a leak by a DC insider. Nothing curious to you about the DNC not giving the FBI access to its servers to assess the hack claim?
In a rational world, the content of the DNC emails would have altered the nomination. They freaking fixed the nomination, but somehow for you that’s irrelevant and you’re fixated on the possibility that Russia did it. As if Putin were so invested in electing Trump that he would derail HRC’s nomination and Trump would then have to face the candidate that could more easily have defeated him.
Absent any data that the Podesta files changed the general election outcome (not because there wasn’t damning stuff in them but because Trump was at least an equally bad nominee), why has an unsubstantiated claim as to who pilfered the files been turned into an “act of war?” Since when does an electronic theft (and apparently not a sophisticated one in the case of the Podesta files) mean that it can only be done by a foreign government? Republicans have been engaging in election dirty tricks like forever; and yet, conjectures about all the more likely Podesta file thieves is completely absent.
Finally, because it may have impacted HRC’s campaign, Putin-Russia had nothing to do with her skirting SOP at State and not turning over her records when she left office. Wikileaks didn’t release any HRC purloined emails. Putin-Russia had nothing to do with HRC classified emails ending up on Weiner’s laptop and how that laptop came into the possession of the FBI.
Let’s not have a double standard about authentic and unsavory stuff that was publicly released about both candidates. “What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.”
