I’ve been busy all day, starting with a little league baseball game that got rained out after the top of the first. Lousy way to end the season.
It doesn’t look like I missed much in the news, but I see that the Trump administration continues to do the exact opposite of what you’d expect if they were trying not to look like pawns of Vladimir Putin.
I’m sure if you reread that you can see your error.
Face it. Trump is likely only the second traitor to be elected president of the US. That’s only 2/45, so we have that going for us.
Hopefully a Civil War does not follow as it did for the first traitor.
In more positive news, the current VP string of not shooting anyone now stands at 11 years and 4 months. Not as impressive as the prior string of 201 years and 7 months, but it’s something to build on.
Assume you are talking about Buchanan and not Lincoln. Even if it is Buchanan, I think treason is the wrong accusation. Treason, by definition involves a foreign power. While the Confederates tried to get Great Britain on their side during the war (because of cotton), GB had nothing to do with secession in the first instance. While Buchanan was certainly incompetent and negligent about trying to keep the Union together, the forces of secession had been seriously brewing since at least 1820. It was just a matter of time before it happened and nothing more.
I think you may be mistaken:
“Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, “
The Confederates were the enemy of the state. Buchanan conspired with them in advance of secession.
It’s not that complicated.
Trump and the GOP are the honey badgers of politics. They simply Do Not Give a Fuck. It’s almost admirable. Trump cavorting with the Russkies, firing whoever he wants, and shitting on the emoluments clause; Murtle McTurtle ramming crummy healthcare through the senate with tax breaks for his buddies. Imagine what the dems could have done with that no-fucks-given attitude when they were in power, 2008-2010.
(What this really means, I believe, is that our politics is spiraling out of control. Shitting on the constitution and breaking every convention is the new normal. What’s next? Who knows. But it won’t be pretty. )
It’s been the new normal since Clinton’s impeachment. Once you’ve impeached a president, stolen a presidential election, squandered the opportunity to eliminate the national debt, started a completely useless avoidable war based on lies, not been held accountable for serial national security disasters foreign and domestic, contributed to and presided over the greatest economic disaster in 80 years, accusing a twice elected President of not being a US citizen because he’s biracial, stealing a Supreme Court seat, and getting a pussy grabber elected, there is no “normal” anymore.
Normal is whatever heinous act (torture, treason, xenophobic racist bigotry, misogyny) you can get away with. Money laundering, emoluments, etc seem to be expanding the envelope at the moment.
Who’s going to stop them? The Democrats? They’ve proven themselves politically craven and personally beholden to the same trough fillers that the republicans feed from. Winning for them means just keeping their jobs and access to corporate loot. Been that way since the 1990s, thanks to the DLC, which did more long term damage to the democratic party than it did short term good.
The only way this stops is the voters have to be mobilized through grass roots efforts.
Really? Little League?
That’s your excuse?
I thought the whole point of the referee’s watch in soccer was to annoy Americans. Why would they change it?
Of course:
Sorry to drop this shopworn cliche, but if it looks like a duck, walks like one, then…
Trump and his administration is clearly in the tank for Putin and Russia. You hear a lot from them how we need to be friends with Russia, or we should not alienate them or call them out on their misdeeds, but to what end?
If they can’t or won’t make a sensible case as to why its in the greater good of the country to do some of these things, then…
