President Donald Trump is promising billions to help Texas rebuild from Hurricane Harvey, but his Republican allies in the House are looking at cutting almost $1 billion from disaster accounts to help finance the president’s border wall.
The pending reduction to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster relief account is part of a spending bill that the House is scheduled to consider next week when Congress returns from its August recess. The $876 million cut, part of the 1,305-page measure’s homeland security section, pays for roughly half the cost of Trump’s down payment on a U.S.-Mexico border wall.
It seems sure that GOP leaders will move to reverse the disaster aid cut next week. The optics are politically bad and there’s only $2.3 billion remaining in disaster coffers.
Not much seems to be working out well for Trumpy-Boy. He’s going to head for Missouri soon to make his case for tax reform, and he doesn’t even realize how dead that effort already is.
Everything he touches fails. So, maybe he’s not the person to try to get relief for southeast Texas or figure out how to raise the debt ceiling. Someone needs to figure those things out, though. And fast.
Please excuse my stupid question: I’m just a bit confused.
We’ve got Trump’s ridiculous Border Wall project, which we have been told for months now, very confidently, will never happen.
And yet there’s a group of Republican congresspeople, who, even in the face of Harvey relief funding, are still pushing to fund Trump’s wall.
How is this a “loss” for Trump? It looks like a win to me.
Ah, yes. Complexity!
Trump needs Democratic votes for his wall. He has none.
When I said it was a “stupid question” I wasn’t being facetious. I was genuinely confused. Thanks for explaining.
As usual the AssPress offers superficial coverage. The one hint that this isn’t nearly so wonderful as it may sound for the Combover King is the sentence suggesting that is his allies in the House. Those allies have typically been the Freedom Caucus – a significant faction among House Republicans, but a faction nonetheless. It’s a faction that probably cannot win over the relative moderate faction of Republicans needed to have a majority. In other words, outside of the Freedom Caucus, it’s not clear that anyone else in the House wants that stupid wall, or is willing to walk the plank to kill emergency funding to help pay for that stupid wall.
There is simply no way the GOP can successfully hold a disaster relief bill hostage over funds to build a wall. All Democrats have to do is scream loudly that they are denying relief to disaster victims. The political fall-out will roast the GOP because everybody understands that the Wall has nothing to do with disaster aid and GOP is just opportunistically trying to sneak their pet project through by attaching it to a must pass bill. SO, they’re to blame and Trump will be blamed.
Under NO circumstances can Democrats be complicit in allowing Trump to build his pointless and cruel wall, no matter what else happens, so they cannot cave on this.
He will use any excuse because he’s getting more desperate for a “win”. So far we’re not getting tired from “all the winning!” He cannot be permitted to win at anything. Right now he’s losing more and more all the time. This must continue. No Democrat can bail him out of his prison.
“All Democrats have to do is scream loudly that they are denying relief to disaster victims.”
Especially when the disaster victims themselves, whatever their party, will be joining in the chorus.
To be putting a financial priority on building a wall to save us from Mexico, when Houston, TEXAS, is under water, greatly multipies the clownage of Trump’s assinine quest for Moby Wall.
My understanding is that Trump went to MO and offered the same old, same old tired, never-has-worked-for-the-99% Trickle Down bs as his vast great tax plan.
As we know, it’s all about cutting taxes on the mega super rich and corporations, all in the name of – and keep clapping louder for Tinkerbell – jawbs creation.
IF ONLY those mega super rich people – already worth multi-billionS (who will be the first to join the six comma club, though?) – get a tax cut, then they will SURELY create jawbs for you lowly disgusting surfs, er, Nazis, er, citizens.
If Trump wants cuts in Disaster Relief to pay for that worse than worthless border wall, good luck. Of course, most of Trump’s fans, including those currently under water in Houston, would most likely clap and cheer and go nuts to see Disaster Relief funds cut in order to build the wall. Why? Because cutting Disaster Relief is sure to hurt some minorities and libruls, so that means it’s all good.
It’s doubtful that Trump will now get Disaster Relief money reduced in order to build the wall, but let’s just say, I won’t hold my breath. This Orange Foolious will come up some other equally awful and financially disasterous way to fund his pet project, no matter what. Let’s hope Congress can keep putting the Kybosh on these awful ideas Trump has, but who know? Congress Critters are pretty awful, themselves.
Good luck to us all.
