Another blast from the past. This song was such an optimistic take on an era that was only barely beginning.
At some future point in time, some other group of kids will, in their own unique way, conjure up some song to characterize a momentous shift in history and hopefully one signalling progress. I intend to still be alive when that happens.
I’ll try to post more later as time permits.
you mix anarchopunk with Taoism? Flux answered that question in 1986. A friend included this on a mixtape for me when he came back from the UK after crashing with Flux, Apostles, and some others from a scene that is now all but forgotten. Anyway, this is an artifact from that era (the whole album is wonderful, and yes I still blast that on long commutes):
I’ll see your anarchopunk meets Taoism and raise you some post-punk meets Zen Buddhism. Here’s Shriekback – Gunning For The Buddha.
I loved Shriekback! Not too many recording artists would dare use parthenogenesis in a lyric, and yet they manage to get away with it:
This video was in heavy rotation on a video show one of the UHF stations in the Los Angeles area hosted around 1985-1986. For those of us without cable, we learned early on that if we just knew the right stations to tune into, there was no need for MTV.
Sometimes anarchopunks had top 10 hits. Chumbawamba was possibly the most left-field band I could think of to score a major hit, and yet they did. And it was a beautiful thing. I remembered them from their first two albums, when they were essentially associated with the anarchopunk scene. One thing that never changed over the years – these were first rate songwriters and performers. This one is arguably one of my theme songs:
Here’s another White Russian recipe from Tipsy Bartender for you: Salted Caramel White Russian.
I have another recipe already planned for June 6th.
The bartender is taking requests.
Looks yummy!
Tonight it’s just lager drinks. Some of my dishes require beer as an ingredient, and since I always have nearly a full bottle left over there is no way I would let it go to waste. Salud!
