I like this Twitter exchange because I think both people have discovered something absolutely correct and key to understanding the limited political success of Donald Trump.
Actually, I think a much better microcosm of why Trump won is how we learned last week that Trump is caging and torturing children, and the media's top focus one week later is whether liberals protesting it are being too rude. https://t.co/AyfgGgHIpN
— Matthew Chapman (@fawfulfan) June 26, 2018
It almost doesn’t matter what controversy Jeremy Peters is referring to there because what actually matters is that too many people are susceptible to right-wing media efforts to galvanize them against the left with small or exaggerated or entirely fictitious stories.
And Matthew Chapman’s response is spot-on. But, again, he need not be so specific. During the campaign and ever since, it has been impossible to get negative stories about Trump to have a proper impact for two reasons. The first is the one Chapman mentions, which is a tendency of the media to gravitate toward balance or both-siderism, in which one large sin by Trump or the Republicans is offset by a smaller sin by Hillary Clinton or the Democrats. The larger reason, which is implied rather than stated outright, is that the media does not and probably cannot stick with a story for any sustained period of time. One scandal or outrage is always followed immediately by another that cannot be responsibly ignored. The only story that has had any staying power at all is the Russia investigation. Everything else comes and goes like a heat wave or a cold front.
I’ve talked about this in various ways before, but for traditional media that prides itself on its officially nonpartisan desire to be an objective referee of our politics, they’re never going to be comfortable with taking a moral stand against one party or president. That violates their standards and their understanding of their proper role. Even when they come under sustained attack from the president and his party, they will only move so far to take a stand. It could be that their model just can’t work in the Era of Trump, and they wind up doing a poor job of educating their readers and of defending themselves at the same time.
The traditional media also have no clear way to give each story the weight it deserves when they’re faced with a never-ending supply of new stories that need to be covered. They will still obsess over stories, sometimes giving them too much weight, but in a 24/7 news environment with a president that never stops transgressing, they are constantly forced to drop something in order to cover something new.
When you add in that they have less influence than ever before, it’s hard to see how they could succeed if you define success by them educating the public about what is true and what is not, and what matters a lot and what matters only a little.
Trump succeeds by undermining faith in the credibility of good reporters and by making sure no one scandal can stay the focus of the public for very long. It’s a formula that works, especially when he gets assistance from right-wing media, trolls farms pushing fake news, and sophisticated and targeted social media advertising.
In light of this, it really is a rather glaring own goal by the media to be scolding the left for their lack of civility. That’s genuinely a microcosm of why Trump won, and also why his support has not completely collapsed.
We’re being Gish-galloped into oblivion.

Or…my own version:
Extremism…violent or nonviolent…must be met with equivalent force for anything to really happen.
Trump called his primary competitors “weak.”
Yup.
They were.
Most of them knew who and what he was, but were afraid to call him out in plain language because they might lose their supporters. They lost them anyway.
Trump’s Dem opponents also took careful measures…careful measures to get rid of Bernie Sanders and other careful measures to further reassure their corporate owners. ( See HRC’s “public position/private decision” gaffe at a supposedly private meeting with Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street powerhouses for one example of such actions that actually came to light.)
Why?
They thought that this was all they had to do to win against that clown.
Buit…they did not win, and here we jolly well are, aren’t we.
And, as we can see from the centrist media’s “I’m shocked. Shocked I say!!!” reaction to the Red Hen kerfuffle and the general arising of some kind of decidedly non-centrist, more leftward popular support for the actions of that restaurant owner…actions and support that have been galvanized by Trump’s immigrant child abuse actions (including his failed attempt at walking those actions back)…there is a growing feeling in the so-far-not-very-involved (read “non-voting”) public that a more leftward swing of he Democratic Party might actually act to its advantage.
Poor Dems!!!
Caught between a radical and a rich place.
Another Scylla and Charybdis moment for the DNC.
What to do!!!
What to do!!!
Judging from what they have done since Trump came to power?
They’ll repeat their Sanders mistake…as they have with the latest DNC actions…and hang on to their increasingly fraying part of the centrist safety blanket for all they’re worth.
So it goes…
And the NY TImes? The Good Grey Lady? Still grey.
Nether left nor right.
Right smack in the middle.
Just as it’s always been.
Just as it’s always been.

“It also could be that since they are all almost totally owned by the corporate system, they fear moving leftward enough to really fight Trumpist types because they would most likely be abandoned by their owners…”
100% dead on.
I read “The Media Monopoly” by Ben H. Bagdikian in 1988. It scared the hell out of me. And it all came true…
You write:
Yes it did, Racer X.
Yes it did.
And it is becoming more true…if that idea is not a logical fallacy of some sort…by the day.
Watch as the NY Times and other media start to make peace with Donald Trump and his crew.
It’s already happening with the Red Hen kerfuffle.
A translation of the various so-called “liberal” media’s scolding of the owners of the Red Hen and their supporters?
Sure:
Unless Trump backs off of his war with the deepest of the Deep State…the Intelligence system…soon only the Bezos-owned, CIA-allied-if-not-owned Washingtoon Post will be the last remaining totally anti-Trump media member. And maybe the lame MSNBC types.
At which point…Trump will have basically won.
It’s all coming to a head, aiming at this November as the next flash point.
God help us all.
Watch.

Beyond sick of right wing racist asshole old white man Arthur Gilroy and his tiresome attempts to divide the Trump resistance.
His claims that the Democratic Party is too centrist are insulting. Arthur’s own views are far, far, far, far, far to the right of the most conservative Democratic Party caucusmembers in Congress.
He is universally supportive of everything Cliven Bundy has done and said. He’s defended that position here, repeatedly. He has been a Ron Paul evangelist here since forever.
Arthur believes that unemployment insurance saps initiative and should be done away with, and he’s never defended Medicaid, SNAP or other social welfare programs. Of course, Ron Paul is famously opposed to all Federal social welfare programs and said in 2015 that the Congressional Black Caucus “are really against war because they want all of that money to go to food stamps for people here” and that is not racist at all, nosiree.
Arthur has denied that Ron Paul is a racist. If Daddy Paul’s positions on civil rights weren’t enough, evidence for us, there’s these excerpts from Ron Paul’s self-published newsletters.
And today, on the day the SCOTUS eviscerated public sector Unions whose members are disproportionately people of color, Ron Paul’s position on the Union question is worth remembering as well.
Racist asshole Arthur Gilroy should FUCK OFF now.
A group…perhaps better, a cadre…of people on this site have tried everything in their power to discourage criticism of the Democratic Party as it stands today. They automatically downrate such posts and have endlessly attacked several posters as liars, pro-Trump trolls and/or spreaders of Russian propaganda. When effectively rebutted, they simply ignore the rebuttal and repeat the same attacks. This tactic is intended to exhaust the patience of the attacked posters and discourage others from reading or posting similar material. It has worked on a few posters, who have simply given up. It has not worked on me. I initially answered their attacks with attempts at reason. After realizing that this was a total waste of time, I simply stopped replying to them. My comments and articles on this site are my replies. Read what I have to say; consider what they have to say and how it is said, and then make up your own minds. Thank you-AG

P.S. Centerfielddj supports the continuation of Nancy Pelosi as minority leader in the House. As far as I am concerned, Pelosi, Schumer and the rest on the Democratic Party’s Clinton wing are the ones who are responsible for the party’s minority position in Congress right out front!!! We need a Democratic Party revolution, not the continuation of same-old/same-old politics as usual. That’s what brought us Trump. From both parties.
Further…that link to Rand Paul’s supposed far-right, “racist” heresy? In principle, I personally agree wholeheartedly with the idea that military monies would be better spent on food stamps than on worldwide military adventures. Does Centerfielddj? It’s hard to tell, because that entity is all about pro-neocentrist Democratic politics and will use…and/or distort…any idea possible to continue that roiling sea of ongoing disasters. I don’t have the time to go ferreting around in the archives of the media of that moment to further researach the motives of Ron Paul in saying that or its context, because I am spending 10 hour days teaching young people how to play, love and understand the indigenous musics on North, Central and South America, most of which have very heavy African influences. But I do know that Ron Paul was…and remains…totally against the misuse of the U.S. military and the ongoing loss/ruination of U.S. lives in the pursuit of corporate megaprofits. It sounds to me that Paul was complaining about the Congressional Black Caucus’s not supporting efforts to stop the war crimes in which the U.S. has been involved since the end of WWII. Food stamps are a thing of the present, and until the racist educational and labor systems in the U.S. are fixed, support of continued governmental assistance for the poor is a priority.
Centerfielddj has repeatedly clamed that I…a successful and widely accepted NYC jazz and latin musician since the late ’60s…am a racist.
Hmmmm…
I refer above to my statement above:
“…that entity is all about pro-neocenrist Democratic politics and will use…and/or distort…any idea possible to continue that series of ongoing disasters.”
For all I know, centerfieldj could be one of those awful Russians that have supposedly tanked this democracy, continuing to promote the worst elements of the Democratic Party.
Who knows?
Not me.
It also suggests that I should “FUCK OFF.”
That is about the true depth of its set of arguments.
Good work, centristdj.
Are you being paid to be so stupid or are you just anther unwitting tool?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Sincerely…
AG
P.P.S. Sorry to leave so soon. I’d really like to stay and flay you some more, but I need to go to work teaching the (multiracial) kids how to play the blues and the meaning of clavé.
Have a nice day.

*P.S. I am going to add the following statement to many of my replies to your “standalone articles” (LOL!) and comments…for the benefit of new readers here. It applies to the comment this replies to as well:
*[ref.]
You’re far, far, far to the right of the most conservative members of the Democratic Congressional caucuses on almost all domestic issues. That is why many of us have had it to here with your bullshit.
You claim that you want the Party to move to the left. You don’t believe in unemployment insurance. You don’t like Federal civil and voting rights laws.
You actually wrote here in the month after the Obergfell SCOTUS decision that if citizens and organizers continued to fight to execute a couple’s right to gain a license for their same sex marriage in the County in Kentucky with the most homophobic County Clerk in the entire United States, that the citizens and organizers would cause LGBTQ Americans to be physically beaten in the streets and in their homes.
And look at the racist as fuck attempts to lie and evade in this section of your latest rotten post:
“It sounds to me that Paul was complaining about the Congressional Black Caucus’s not supporting efforts to stop the war crimes in which the U.S. has been involved since the end of WWII.”
“It sounds to me…”.
What an outstandingly assholish sentence that is. A sentence with a fact-free claim against the Congressional Black Caucus.
I am a constituent of Barbara Lee. I’d like to see you make this claim to her face.
And this sophistry:
“…In principle, I personally agree wholeheartedly with the idea that military monies would be better spent on food stamps than on worldwide military adventures…Food stamps are a thing of the present, and until the racist educational and labor systems in the U.S. are fixed, support of continued governmental assistance for the poor is a priority.”
What’s missing from this? Any criticism whatsoever of Ron Paul, who is opposed to our spending on food stamps. He also wants to massively slice all other Federal programs, including Medicare and Social Security, and wants to massively cut the Federal government’s Medicaid spending and turn the program into block grants to the States which they could use for tax cuts for the rich. He wants to cut Federal taxes for the rich and corporations much more that Trump and Republicans just did. He wants to repeal the ACA, taking away health insurance for over 20 million Americans.
And this is a nice nugget of info from Ron Paul’s record: “… on January 22, 2007, Paul was the lone member out of 415 voting to oppose a House measure to create a National Archives exhibit on slavery and Reconstruction, seeing this as an unauthorized use of taxpayer money.”
Not racist at all, none of it, eh?
Like I said. You’re not here to improve the Democratic Party. You’re here in increasingly pathetic attempts to divide our movement with your racist horseshit.
Next, I’ll start detailing your toxic sexism.
It has been calculated that Trump got billions in free air time from the non-partisan traditional media in 2016.
When not broadcasting a his empty podiums, they let The Donald do call in interviews. They looked the other way on his norm breaking (ex. his lawsuits and the tax returns), never seriously questions his campaign promises, ran cover for his voters, and threw his sexual harassment accusers under the campaign bus.
Considering this I’d argue Trump NEEDED that billions in free air time to even get to November, much less win. All things staying on this course, he is going to need twice that to get re-elected.
O/T — Crap crap crap. Justice Kennedy just announced he’s retiring.
Say farewell to the Supreme Court for a generation.
No, that happened when McConnell stole the seat for Gorsuch.
Kennedy being replaced by another ardent wingnut won’t change the ultimate 5-4 balance of the court because Kennedy’s never lived up to any liberal tendencies the left projected onto him.
. . . If Kennedy held on until Trump’s successor nominated his replacement . . .
. . . and if that successor were a Dem . . .
. . . and if Congressional makeup shifted to Dems sufficiently that that Dem Prez could get a liberal — or even center-left — nominee confirmed . . .
[and I’m sure I’m leaving some significant “if”s out]
. . . then SCOTUS would at least begin tipping back towards sanity, i.e., stealing Garland’s seat to hand it to Occupant Gorsuch would be partially mitigated, with potential for further righting (“lefting”?) of the ship of justice if subsequent retirements occurred among the rightwing “Justices”. With the possibility of also replacing The Notorious RBG or other liberal retiring with a liberal replacement instead of another rightwinger.
And yes, I’m completely aware of how many “if”s that is, and of the (im)probabilities associated with each. But the point is, even the theft of Garland’s seat didn’t cement a rightwing SCOTUS majority for a generation.
Alas, I think janicket’s right that, if Trump’s allowed to name a Kennedy replacement, and if Dems can’t prevent confirmation (longshot indeed with BRP* Prez and Congressional majorities), then it is cemented for a generation.
*Banana Republican Party
When Trump got elected this and likely more were baked in.
Yes, Kennedy was essentially a solid vote for the reactionary bloc of Repubs, especially in his last term. I don’t think he sided with the Dem bloc in a single 5-4 case the 2017-18 term, so he went out as a confirmed right wing extremist and is presumably very happy with his thoroughly terrible legacy.
But there are some quibbles of some significance. Obviously his retirement in these circumstances means all “his” gay rights jurisprudence is very likely doomed. Also hard not to see that his last hurrah striking down the Texas family planning regs is also doomed, as Roe/Casey now may be–but Roberts’ Repubs can always keep Roe/Casey “on the books” while simply holding that any and all draconian regulation is fine. But it is likely there will be a noticeable change here.
Finally this is the end of the regulatory state and any attempts to protect the environment, areas which Kennedy could at least swing on in days past.
But yes, he was much more a reliable rightwing and corporate extremist than his image in the useless corporate media. Think about the kind of “Justice” that gives an illegitimate prez like Trumper another seat voluntarily! But then he forced the GoOp’s first 21st Century electoral college prez down our throat in the Stolen Election 2000, so why not add insult to injury and give another illegitimate prez a second stolen Supreme Court seat in 2018?
So Roe V. Wade gets overturned?
I’ve heard it called the Sarandon Court. A pox on Jill Stein- now there’s somebody who should be shunned in public.
Sarandon wanted a revolution. She got one.
I’d say the pox is more fairly flung on Obama.
I’ll give my obligatory: Thanks, Obama.
I doubt it. Conservatives would suffer if white middle aged up women lost their raison d’etre for voting Republican.
As already stated, more likely they will keep it for the electoral wedge issue, but wave through whatever institutional reproductive rights/women’s health apartheid system Republican dream of at night.
And no grief for the 3 D’s that voted to confirm Gorsuch? How about we start with Dem Senators that actually are voting with the Republicans before moving on to people who were essentially rounding errors in the last election.
I mean, holy shite…
For the Gorsuch nomination the Republicans got each and every one of their thin majority of Senators to nuke the filibuster for SCOTUS nominees. At that point, clearly they were going to hold together on the final floor vote, thus making even a 100% No vote from the minority caucus irrelevant to the final outcome.
With that important factual context in mind, want to undermine support for the Senate Democrats who voted to confirm Gorsuch after the filibuster was nuked? Well, you have your chance this year, spiny.
All three are up for re-election this year. They’ve already won their Democratic Party primaries.
With majority control of the Senate on literally the thinnest of threads, how would it help your position to weaken support for the tiny sliver of the caucus who voted for Gorsuch?
Tendency? It’s who they are, there’s no “tendency” or “gravitate” involved. Call a spade a spade.
The traditional media outlets do this for a number of reasons:
I love my weekly meeting with the old guys, conservative icons all, This morning it came around to how corrupt the Clinton Foundation was. And why wasn’t she in jail, When I said it has an A rating they mocked me and laughed. Then I said well the Trump Foundation and his kids are in trouble with the law for fraud. More laughter. Fake news. What’s the freaking point. We are headed into hell. And the Democratic Party? Right. I’m waiting…. still waiting.
Thank you for trying at least. I gave up trying to get through to the knuckleheads years ago. Logic, science, data, common sense…all in one ear and out the other.
How do you overcome bumper-sticker conditioning? The right wing propagandists are masters of soundbite-sized answers to everything, little chunks of emotionally satisfying simple responses for every hot-button issue, ready to vomit out and overwhelm all the long boring explanations of logic, science, data and common sense.
Natural consequences. Some people are not educable at all, you can’t expect it to work for everyone.
(The obvious problem in this case is that we are all going to experience “natural consequences”).
There are many cases of right-wing jackasses coming around after some personal experience.
If there are no personal consequences, there will be no change.
True dat; but (a) they’re masters at deflecting blame for their misfortunes onto the hated libtards and their evil overlords Obama, Clinton, Pelosi, etc. etc.; and (b) natural consequences delivering a powerful enough clue-by-four to penetrate their deflector shields will be catastrophic for the rest of us too.
“can’t work in the Era of Trump”
The corporate media has permanently failed for the reasons both you and grog identify. It cannot possibly be resurrected as a national ref, even if “it” wanted to be. A much more effective (and combative) news media failed against the Hitler movement in an era when traditional media was much more universal, entrenched and essential. The lesson is that traditional media cannot succeed in a rising reactionary Volkist (fascist) environment, and that is where America now finds itself for a thousand and one reasons. To focus on the Red Hen story is simply to openly cater to Trumper and his dirtbags.
At this point even highly professional reporting by an objective national press would be nibbling at the margins because of the creation of a obdurate reactionary white minority of too great a size. It looks like Dr Trumper’s floor is 40%, plenty large enough to withstand practically anything, especially given a failed constitution.
The avenues are being closed off, one by one.
The short attention span of the media explanation holds no water against Hillary’s emailZ, the Clinton foundation, or the 24 years of media and Republican harassment of her.
Washington and especially the media are wired for Republicans. No complicated explanation, conspiracy, etc. Democrats are expected to be perfect and they always fail that test, while Republicans are expected to be the ruthless, hateful, selfish, corrupt soldiers in service to corporate greed and they never fail that test.
The national media people are paid pretty well by their big business masters. Not hard for the people with the money and the jobs to work the refs ( their employees).
I mean, unless Monica Lewinsky is involved. The media certainly had no problem “taking a moral stand against one party or president” then.
But hey, what’s a little treason when compared to a blow job? We all know which of those is more fun to talk about.
