I’m happy Colleen Hanabusa gave up her House seat to run an unsuccessful campaign for governor of Hawai’i, but I’m not so thrilled that Ed Case made a comeback and will be replacing her in Congress.
Tulsi Gabbard also easily won renomination, so Hawai’i’s congressional delegation is going to be mightily disappointing.
I remember walking the streets of downtown Honolulu with my Japanese wife back in 2001 on our honeymoon. Every lawyer, every council member, and every legislator had a Japanese surname. I turned to my wife, laughing and commented “This is like Chicago with the Irish having everything stitched up in the 1950’s under Richard Daley The First…unbelievable.” Folks with Japanese ancestors dominate that island’s politics. I’m surprised Hanabusa lost in her bid for the governorship.
David Ige is also a Japanese-American, so his primary win is not an exception to the rule.
I have a friend (gasp, a Bernie sis!) who’s a big Gabbard fan. I haven’t heard much about her. What makes her disappointing? (No attitude, just curious.)
She’s chummy with Hindu nationalists, supports Bashar al Assad and still to my knowledge hasn’t acknowledge he’s responsible for
Chemical attacks, and Steve Bannon likes her. Voted against allowing Syrian refugees to settle here, supports the war on terror. Common thread in all of this seems to be she’s an Islamophobe.
Oh, right, I did read something about her meeting with Assad and, not to get too wonky and technical, but I was like “whuuuuut”?
Tulsi Gabbard – a bigoted response
Looks like she doesn’t fit an easy label. Either her Dem primary voters love her or she is the beneficiary of a strong political machine.
