It’s hard for me to get worked up one way or the other about the silly American tradition of having the president of the United States pardon some turkeys a few days before Thanksgiving. It’s a pretty hard thing to screw up as long as you don’t inject politics into the ceremony. Unfortunately, President Trump turned what should have been a light and unifying moment into another opportunity to be an unpardonable jerk.
I only heard part of the event because it was playing on my car radio when I went to the store to get some urgently needed dog food. As a result, I missed the segment where Trump joked about recounts. Here’s what he said about “Peas” and “Carrots,” the two lucky turkeys.
Joined by first lady Melania, Trump said although both turkeys were being pardoned, Peas was declared the winner of a White House poll that asked Americans to pick which turkey should be pardoned. Trump deemed the contest a “fair and open election.”
“Unfortunately, Carrots refused to concede and demanded a recount, and we’re still fighting with Carrots,” he said. “I will tell you we’ve come to a conclusion. Carrots, I’m sorry to tell you the result did not change.”
That would probably have been a permissible joke, despite the raw feelings about how the elections in Georgia and Florida were conducted. But then he went on to make a purely partisan attack:
After their time in the spotlight, the president said Peas and Carrots will live out their days at the nearby Virginia Tech’s “Gobbler’s Rest.” They join last year’s birds, Drumstick and Wishbone, who both received a pardon.
However, Trump said the turkeys’ retirement “won’t be entirely a rest.”
“Even though Peas and Carrots have received a presidential pardon, I have warned them that House Democrats are likely to issue them both subpoenas,” he said.
After that, Trump took a shot at the left-leaning Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
The irritating thing about this for me was that I was relieved when the radio came on with Trump speaking and I realized that he wasn’t spewing a bunch of lies or leveling groundless attacks and spurious conspiracy theories. I thought, “Here’s an opportunity for him to just have fun and act normal, and maybe he can actually pull something like this off without completely failing at his job.”
And he seemed to be getting the job done adequately, reading from his cue cards. It allowed me to relax for just a moment.
And then it came as surely as sunrise. He made it into just one more opportunity to attack our institutions, including the integrity of our elections, our Congress, our law enforcement agencies, and our courts.
He will never change, and he will never be an acceptable president.
Severe Narcissists are incapable of normal human emotions; they can’t even fake them. You’re like Charlie Brown and Lucy and the football at this point.
I’m picturing a long tumble down the steps of Air Force 1 caught live and in technicolor on CNN.
Is that wrong?
Nope. I hope that would be his last self inflicted wound.
Could we overdub it with New Order’s “Blue Monday”?
The original is a classic, but I prefer the cover by Orkestra Obsolete.
Maybe somebody forgets to push the ramp all the way up to Air Force 1. Straight drop…..
another opportunity to be an unpardonable jerk.
Let us hope he is truly unpardonable.
MSNBC actually cut away from a worthwhile interview to air this nonsense. Melania looked like she was wearing a bathrobe, but at least for once she actually had put her arms through the sleeves.
As a conman and financial criminal who went into politics, of course he has no conception of the public good.
As an unqualified, immature ignoramus with a severe personality disorder, of course he cannot perform the most basic elements of a political leadership position that requires immense skills across a broad range of requirements.
As a partisan deadender who is now speaking exclusively to his horrendous base of Proud Deplorables, of course every circumstance and public utterance is just another opportunity to “own the libs”. The tradition at this ridiculous ritual is that the prez is supposed to deploy lighthearted “humor”, so of course it must be at the expense of Der Trumper’s hated opponents. It’s all he can think about.
This will all be getting much, much worse. Soon everything out of his mouth will be rancid hate-filled sewage. How low can he can go is now the question. He already makes “joking” calls for political violence by his white Deplorables. It’s inconceivable that he won’t make serious calls for it in the coming months. And of course since he is the prez, the hapless media declares it is compelled to parrot every word, usually without a word of critical commentary.
All of this was completely predictable by July 2016.
America has never been weaker. The country is more vulnerable to assorted mischief than it has been for a long time.
. . . gets at something that’s needed such getting-at-succinctly for a long time now (at least since Clinton’s “deplorable”-defining remark).
So I’m probly gonna hafta be stealing it.
Narcississtic jerk asshole behaves like narcissistic jerk asshole. News at 11.
I realize it’s Martin’s job to follow all kinds of political stuff. Thank you for your service (truly) so that I don’t have to do it.
I would expect nothing more or less from this worthless POS national embarresment than what happened. The only worse turkey pardoning was done by the Tundra Twit with that dude putting dead turkeys through something like a turkey chipper in the background as she pardoned “her” turkeys. Comedy gold and a smidge worse than yesterday’s claptrap from Versailles on the Potomac.
Needless to say, what’s far far worse than this is Trump’s pardoning of MBS from ordering the stone cold murder of a US resident journalist in Turkey. But Heigh-Oh! Gas is cheap, so it’s all good. And MBS told the Asshole in Chief that he didn’t do it. So it’s all good. Back to US taxpayers paying through our noses for that jerkwad to play golf at Mar-El-Crappo.
The value of Trump’s Presidency is that it reveals fully the views of today’s conservative movement and Republican Party. This is proven out by Trump’s maintenance of support/approval from about 90% of Republicans. If he wasn’t expressing their views in full, they wouldn’t be supporting him as they are.
It’s been very instructive to see Trump running with a Republican-controlled Congress and Supreme Court. It shows forever and ever that anyone making the argument that there is no difference between the Parties and Movements is a misinformed person and/or a malicious liar.
