People tend to read a lot into it when our nation’s major political parties choose the site for their national conventions. It’s not always so obvious why the choice was made, but that doesn’t prevent rampant speculation. It’s not rare for a city to be chosen in a state that the party either is almost assured of winning or very unlikely to win. It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that the Democrats chose Milwaukee because they want to win Wisconsin in 2020 and they’re looking for any slight edge they can get.
The runner-up cities of Miami and Houston would have each been interesting in their own ways, but it was Wisconsin where Hillary Clinton suffered her most shocking upset, and it was her failure to campaign at all in Wisconsin that caused the most Monday morning quarterbacking of her campaign.
The Democrats retook the governorship of Wisconsin last year, and their prospects there are looking up. This time, however, no one wants of get accused of taking anything for granted.
The convention is schedule for July, shortly before the Summer Olympics kick off in Tokyo. The media narrative has already started that this is indicates a preference for reclaiming the Democrats’s historic Rust Belt advantage over embracing their multicultural future. I kind of doubt that played much of a role in the decision at all.
There are a lot of logistical considerations that go into assessing the various bids, and some are even saying that DNC Chairman Tom Perez’s links to Milwaukee played he a part. His wife was raised in the suburbs and the couple was married there. But all other things being equal, winning Wisconsin is a surer bet than winning Texas, and Florida is hot in July and subject to hurricanes.
Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes a party really wants to avoid being accused twice in a row of ignoring a state that cost them the presidency.
It’ll take a lot more than just holding a convention here. They’ll actually have to get their shit together and work for it. Which is something they did not do in 2016.
Pelosi came out against impeachment
Whether one is for or against that posture (at this current time prior to the Mueller report), her expressing it as being because Trump “isn’t worth it” is classic first-class trolling of him!
Except it’s not. And that goes doubly for the “he’s Putin’s puppet!!” claims. Did you see the rest of her comments? Shit, Boo has already laid out the case that there is plenty in the public record that would support impeachment. Some of us said last year that Trump won’t be impeached. We saw what Pelosi did re: C- Augustus and knew what to expect. Which is sadly what is happening.
Yep. Speaker Nancy will smash when the time is right.
Maybe but its also wrong. There is no one thats ever been more deserving of being stripped of the offive.
Agree that he richly “deserves” being removed from office but deserving simply is not the same as assembling a public and Congressional majority supporting that proposition. That’s what is still lacking, presently.
She’s right. It is not worth the disruption and effort — yet. And it would fail. Build the case in the house and from Mueller. Then take your best shot. It won’t be easy, bc we need twenty republican votes and all democratic votes. And we know that won’t happen without a good deal of more evidence against individual 1. Now is premature.
“Yet” is the operative word. There’s nothing to stop Pelosi from “changing her mind” (assuming it’s truly made up) if/when the goods come in.
Good. It’s too soon. They need to keep investigating all the criminal and corrupt stuff first. I think that was a message to her caucus. I wish they’d stop trying to create articles of impeachment. It’s juvenile and bad politics at this juncture.
Every time she does this, I contact my representative and make the urgent case for impeachment. (There’s new material every time.) And I contact my senators and tell them that I’ve done so. (If I were a $5K+ donor, they’d pay attention to me, but I do what I can do.)
See nycsouthpaw, who makes a very compelling point.
When the people lead, the leaders will follow.
Dhe cam count votes.
And she’ll do the right thing, consequences be damned — if she had the votes.
She knowingly and willingly blew up her majority in 2010 in the course of passing the largest expansion of social provision in this country in 50 years.
Could have small-balled it, or dropped it altogether, as other Dem leaders were urging.
From the Joe.My.God site:
Political conventions need two major venues, a daytime venue for all the meetings and caucuses and a nighttime arena for the major speeches. Milwaukee’s venues are only blocks apart, which surely was a big selling point compared to Miami, which would involve shuttling thousands across Biscayne Bay every afternoon.
Great choice. We might hear from some dairy farmers who will still be hurting from the donald’s tariffs/trade war.
Well, at least it’s a short drive to Chicago.
I wonder if The Safe House is still open?
This is good news for Usingers. Political sausage makers get to eat some really excellent sausage.
