Welcome back, music lovers. Here’s a little something from 1999:
1999 marked the year that Reich Remixed was released. Steve Reich’s iconic pieces were left in the hands of a number of prominent DJs, who added their own spin to music that was already ahead of its time. That was the year of several other remix albums, as well as some important recordings by a number of electronic artists. I’ll cover a few of those this week.
More to come as time permits. In the meantime, cheers!
Just a friendly reminder that if you ever want a safe space away from the madness that is going on in the US and across our aching planet, you landed in the right place. Maybe there is no true escape, and perhaps there should not be. But there should at least be places where we can have a bit of a breather before going back into battle.
I promised April Fools drink recipes this week. I begin with Mac & Cheese Shots – Tipsy Bartender.
I have at least two more equally disgusting recipes to share this week. Stay tuned.
It isn’t easy being cheesy!
There’s a meme for that.
And a video, too. 🙂
Here’s another disgusting joke drink recipe, Finals Week Bomb – Tipsy Bartender.
I first posted this recipe video to my personal blog as An entire college drinking and eating experience in one glass. Below the video, I wrote “It does look disgusting, but the idea is hilarious. And, no, I’m not ever going to drink this thing. I remember my college days at UCLA well enough not to try this.”
Now the most disgusting recipe I’ve seen so far, Kim Jong-Un Nuclear Bomb Shot – KelseyDarragh – Tipsy Bartender
I embedded this recipe in North Korea tests fifth nuclear device. Before the video, I wrote “While I take North Korea’s nuclear threat seriously, I don’t take ‘Kim Young One’ himself that seriously, so I’m going to have some fun at his expense with the assistance of Skyy the Tipsy Bartender.” After it, I wrote “That thing looks more disgusting than the Finals Week Bomb I featured in An entire college drinking and eating experience in one glass. Yuck! It’s certainly what ‘Kim Young One’ deserves!”
DJ Krush from 1999. He’s a Japanese turntablist who is still at it.
Boredoms – a Japanese noise band that gained some notoriety at the start of the 1990s. It has been quite a number of years since they last recorded anything, but then again, there probably is not a studio to handle the sound of what has become possible the world’s loudest drum circle (as in drum sets!) that drown out the bassist and guitarists even with their amps set all the way to 11. Their vocalist, Eye, is now more of a conductor.
But this track, and the album from which it came, were from a quieter period. They sort of reminded me of very early Kraftwerk at the time – just with turn of the millennium sensibilities.
DJ Krush remixing an old Miles Davis track, “Black Satin” in 1999.
DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid released the Subliminal Minded ep in 1999. This was probably my favorite track from that recording.
Sly and Robbie collaborating with Howie B in 1999.
This track is probably best known for its appearance on a VW Jetta commercial in 2000, but was recorded in 1999.
This was released in 1998, but the fact that someone would take some early SF film footage and pair it with this track is just too cool for me to pass up sharing.
