There are two things I am tired of saying to Republican lawmakers who stand up to Trump.
- What took you so long?
- Why couldn’t you do this before you announced you’re not running for office again?
It’s not like I don’t want people like Bob Corker and Jeff Flake to denounce Trumpism, and I welcome Michigan Rep. Paul Mitchell’s decision today to quit the Republican Party. But Mitchell is retiring so his decision is more about preserving his reputation for posterity than about fighting back in Congress against his party’s abandonment of representative democracy.
Here’s what I want to see. I want to see Republicans say what needs to be said and then fight for their jobs in a Republican primary. If they lose, they lose, but at least they’re fighting for real rather than accepting defeat before they’re willing to speak up.
I actively detest Mitt Romney and think he is one of the most dishonest people America has ever seen at the highest echelons of our politics, but at least he’s voted to remove Trump from power and continues to speak against him without first deciding to retire. If he loses his safe Utah Senate seat to a Republican challenger as a result, he’ll still know that he did the right thing, but if he wins it he’ll actually give his colleagues courage to follow his example.
I think Rmoney is waiting to see what happens with the GA runoff. I can’t imagine why he wouldn’t switch parties if the Democrats win both Seats, cementing himself a place as committee chair of something or other.
By the way, Georgia voter here. I early voted today. When I got to the early voting location, there was about 40 people waiting in line in front of me, at about 4:00pm. Took them 11 minutes to process everyone in front of me, about a minute to get my Dominion voting card, and about 3 minutes to quadruple check my ballot and snap a picture before turning in my ballot. This is south DeKalb, so heavily Democratic, the county itself went 83% Biden in 2020.My particular polling location (South DeKalb Mall) is probably about 95+ Biden.
Just wanted to brag a little.

Good comment, thanks. I think it’s unlikely Romney will switch parties. He’s got deep family roots in the GOP, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that matters more to him than the fact that Utah is a heavily Republican state.
That said, I hope Schumer and the Democrats are actively working to recruit one or more Republicans to “jump the fence”. (For example—and not that it’s going to happen but—Susan Collins as chair of Homeland Security would be a small price to pay for control of the Senate.)
I also will take this opportunity for my plea that Romney, Collins, Sasse, Murkowski, Portman, et al, form a “Blue Dog”-like caucus that would be willing to cut deals with either party to advance their agenda. (And my secondary plea that some Washington journalist write a book that explains the mystery of why centrist Republicans have failed so ineptly at using their power over the past 12 years.)
Regarding your secondary plea, the Republicans’ agenda is for the government to do nothing except protect private property rights. That, in their view, is the only legitimate role for government. Their agenda is achieved by obstruction.
Romney isn’t remotely a profile in courage. Mormons are the one right-wing Christian group that has no love for Trump. They recognize the hypocrisy.
Rmoney isn’t an ally, he’s an opportunist. Doesn’t mean he couldn’t be useful.
