Spider Robinson once came up with a set of three wishes. I can’t remember them exactly, but they were something like this:
I wish I had everything I need for a happy and fulfilled life — enough money to live on, enough food to eat, a good place to live, enough things to do, and clean water, clean air, clean soil, safety, security, etc. in which to do them.
I wish that wish #1 would make me as happy and fulfilled as it possibly could.
I wish that, after taking wishes #1 and #2 into account, everyone in the world was happier and more fulfilled than I was.
Some Spider fan out there can probably set me straight on what the wishes actually were. (#3 was phrased something like “After taking wishes #1 and #2 into account, I wish I was the most miserable person in the world” — but I like positive phrasing better.)
I need to get dressed and go out and water the strawberries. They got scorched in the 90° heat wave but some of them are still struggling along, and I think they might be coaxed into reviving if we don’t just let them die of thirst.
more’s the pity, and we never let the garden flat-die, but my favorite flowers (mallows) got sunburned and so did most everything else. The green is still there, but most of the blooms are long gone.
I posted this in the last cafe right before it closed, so I’ll put it again here because it’s a question quite a few have asked.
Both Dreamhaven Books and Uncle Hugos have signed copies that can be ordered via their sites, though I stopped by the stores recently enough that the info isn’t on their websites yet.
For those who might want a personalized signed copy I’m trying to set something up with Dreamhaven where I could pick a date to come in and personalize a number of preordered copies. In the past they’ve done that for other local authors-arrange an in-store signing on a particular date where the author can also sign copies for shipping. My fellow Wyrdsmith, Naomi Kritzer, had one set up like this:
“Just call or e-mail them, and order a copy with instructions regarding how you want them signed. The staff will give me the information when I’m there, I’ll sign it, and they’ll ship it to you.”
Once I hear back from Dreamhaven on how that might work, I’ll post something about it in the cafe and the open thread at the time.
Thanks. It’s really nice that the book promo stuff is going so well and I’m excited about it, but man I’m looking forward to getting back to wrting full time. I’ve got a new book going now, and I’m hoping to get at least a few hundred words after I sign off here in a little while. Meeting Nancy and Scribe and Anamolous was great.
It gave me a chance to clean up the various grammar and other errors from the first version. I know that I need to reread like five times in the morning, but do I do it?
The flowers are lovely, btw. And how is life going other than the dead garden?
Morning, afternoon all. In recovery mode from the Blues Fest this weekend…movin’ real slow today.
Have 150+ photos to download and got thru so I won’t be slacking long…here’s a flower pic I took in homage to Olivia, SN and all you flower lovers who post some beautiful stuff…Harebell, I think:
I think the world situation is getting to the spouse; last night he dreamed he was standing outside and saw a giant mushroom cloud in the distance — he almost woke up screaming, he told me this morning. 🙁 Maybe we should take a break from the news, or at least fast forward through the Iraq and Israel stuff on “Countdown” to get to “Oddball” and “Worst Person” and the Mel Gibson updates. lol
Going to get some stuff done today, then going out to fill the car before the prices go through the roof again…
Hey everyone – I’m back from lunch and it’s bright and sunny and extremely hot but I hear thunder close by. I sure hope we get a storm and that things cool off.
We went for a walk in a garden by the river this morning and I thought that I would try my hand at flower photography. I thought the insect in this flower, growing wild just above the rocky shore, was interesting.
I love morning glories! They used to grow so wild and quick in my childhood yard that we’d have to cut them off the garden hose almost every morning. I’ve tried many times as an adult to grow them and I just can’t.
Hey all, Swordsmith over at big orange is doing a great series on dealing with the publishing industry. Episode seven is up right now. It’s on literary agents, the whys and wherefores, and it’s good stuff. For any of y’all who are thinking about taking the plunge on writing and submitting a book it’s a nice resource.
We did. She got an awesome Gateway notebook, refurbished, for a great price. It’s much nicer than mine, which was drowned in a tragic accident 2 weeks after Christmas.
I found a place on Craigslist that will fix a laptop (if it can be fixed) for $45 to $80 – so I’m going to try that first.
There are thunderstorms brewing all around here in the heat of the afternoon. I hope the plane gets off okay – and I’m glad it’s not me flying through thunderstorms.
Yeah I used to hate that. I remember landing at a small airport here one time and I couldn’t see the runway until we were almost down. Really bad weather.
In my new medicated state I don’t mind flying so much, but since I once saw a plane get spectacularly struck by lightning while making its approach into Cleveland, I’m not sure I’ll ever be comfortable taking off or landing during a storm.
How are you going to get to the Chicago meetup without flying?
Energy-Saving Checklist
Save the planet — and a heap of money on utility bills — with these easy fixes to make your home more energy-efficient
Instead of this… Rinsing dishes before placing them in the dishwasher.
Try this… Load dishes into the dishwasher as they are.
And save… 6,500 gallons of water, or $30 a year on average.
We got back from the gallery, and I just had a big bowl of chocolate ice cream … ahhhhhhhhhh … all the rels are tired out and off resting and reading and playing video games … peaceful!
Nothing big:
That all children are safe and fed.
I like that one.

Great 3 wishes.

Hi SN. That’s a great picture. Your shots are really amazing.
Thanks, FM. That was back before I let my garden die a horrible, thirsty death.
How is your neighbor?
I don’t know about the neighbor. Probably won’t know until later today.
I wish in my yard I could get the plants and grass to die. We keep getting just enough rain to dash my hopes though. 🙁
I thought the grapevine down there was much more effective. 😉
Kudzu, yes it is, but people frown on planting it in your yard. The stuff is something once it takes over.
I need to get dressed and go out and water the strawberries. They got scorched in the 90° heat wave but some of them are still struggling along, and I think they might be coaxed into reviving if we don’t just let them die of thirst.
Those are very pretty pictures, by the way.

This one looks like eggs

Hi Kelly. I’m really glad everything is going so well. Also loved the pictures in NLinStPaul’s diary.

I’ve got a new book going now, and I’m hoping to get at least a few hundred words after I sign off here in a little while. Meeting Nancy and Scribe and Anamolous was great.
Thanks for bringing it over here, Kelly. Makes me wish I hadn’t already bought a copy. 😉
It gave me a chance to clean up the various grammar and other errors from the first version. I know that I need to reread like five times in the morning, but do I do it?

Gotta go. FMom is needing something.
Back in awhile.

Either everybody is at work, taking a nap or has a life.
Which one, one may ask?
I’m working on taking a nap. Not really – just got back from taking my niece to the airport.
Did you get her squared away for college?
We did. She got an awesome Gateway notebook, refurbished, for a great price. It’s much nicer than mine, which was drowned in a tragic accident 2 weeks after Christmas.
I remember when the sad demise of your laptop happened.
You need another one.
I found a place on Craigslist that will fix a laptop (if it can be fixed) for $45 to $80 – so I’m going to try that first.

I’m a firm believer in teleportation. 🙂
In my new medicated state I don’t mind flying so much, but since I once saw a plane get spectacularly struck by lightning while making its approach into Cleveland, I’m not sure I’ll ever be comfortable taking off or landing during a storm.
How are you going to get to the Chicago meetup without flying?
We ain’t settling for no teleported Family Man in Chicago.
No teleportation, then I guess I’ll have to be there in spirit. :~)
If you’re not going, I’m not going.
Hah! Trying the old guilt trip are we?
You sure you aren’t really Andi’s mother. 😛
Just think – that’s 6 more packs of cigarettes!
Sounds way more slackerly than what I usually do.
Just for you when you fly.
Crazy Pilots
Gee, thanks for that, FM. Whaddya trying to do to me?
Trying to ease your mind. See no worry about lighting. 🙂
My favorite part is when they show it whizzing by the terminal window. Cool.
Yeah I thought it was funny when I saw it.
Heya SN …
How’s it going?
Hi Olivia. How’s your day gone so far?
We got back from the gallery, and I just had a big bowl of chocolate ice cream … ahhhhhhhhhh … all the rels are tired out and off resting and reading and playing video games … peaceful!
Sounds like you need to get back to work just to get some rest. 🙂
I’m already getting that end of holiday feeling about tomorrow. ugh
You’ve had a holiday. You should be looking forward to getting back behind that desk. 🙂
speak for yourself mister!!
It’s wonderful to see someone that loves going to work. 🙂
I’m pulling us back over on the left.
Wonder where SN went? I wanted to tell her about my scariest flying experience. Nope better not. 🙂
I’m pulling us back over on the left.
Oh Family Man, don’t you wish it was this easy?
p.s. hi everybody!
I have to go back to work and lurking now.
I do wish it was. BTW I love your sig line.
