It’s been a long and frustrating day, so no recipe this time. all I can say is thank god for beer: on tap, in the can, or in the bottle. You know, like Hank sang.

I brewed oatmeal stout yesterday, helped by a friend who had tried hard to talk me into homebrewing and finally succeeded. She sweet-talked her favorite recipe out of her ex-bf – “whatever else I’ve said about him, he makes good beer”.
She said more than once “that’s not how ‘Bill’ did it”. And I didn’t mention a couple of other times when I just let her do something that I wouldn’t have. My point here is that there is no one right way to make beer, you can get a good product by various methods. In fact it’s one of my favorite things about home brewing, although for a while when I started I found it frustrating when different books showed significantly different techniques.

Truer words were never spoken. I have a bunch of beer books, ranging from Papazian’s “Joy of Homebrewing”, which is seat of the pants all the way, to the new Extreme Brewing by Sam Calagione. The only thing they have in common is that the recipes are great. Technique-wise, they couldn’t be more different. Results-wise? Awesome.
“whatever else I’ve said about him, he makes good beer”.”
heh. that’s what my ex says about me.
how long til the oatmeal stout is ready?

I bottle my beer, so have to wait for natural carbonation. So it takes 6 to 8 weeks from now.
