You thought Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Prosser, a Republican and Scott Walker backer had lost the election to his Dem opponent yesterday by a narrow margin? Well, surprise surprise, a Republican County Clerk for Waukesha County, well known for her — let us say less than sterling reputation for honesty and competence — suddenly discovered “7,582 votes uncounted votes for Prosser” on her computer, or just enough to force the putative Democratic challenger, JoAnne Kloppenberg, to have to pay for a statewide recount, rather than have the state pay for an automatic recount.
And get this: she found all those missing votes on her personal computer, which, unlike any other county in Wisconsin, is used by her to tally votes from her county;s precincts. How amazing is that?
[L]ate Thursday, the county clerk in Waukesha, a Republican stronghold, said workers had found 7,582 votes uncounted votes for Prosser.
News of the uncounted votes came as officials throughout Wisconsin were conducting county canvasses, a final review of voting records that allows the state to certify this week’s bitterly contested elections. […]
Kathy Nickolaus, the Waukesha clerk, apologized for the uncounted votes and blamed “human error.”
She said at a news conference that she had failed to properly save a spreadsheet showing one town’s voting results. […]
Last fall, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper reported the Waukesha County Board had ordered an audit of Nickolaus’s office, citing concerns about the integrity of the equipment she used he backup system.
The newspaper said the move came after Nickolaus removed the election results collection and tallying system from the county computer network last spring and installed it on standalone personal computers in her office.
The newspaper quoted an official saying Nickolaus had been “uncooperative with attempts to have information technologists review the system and confirm the backups.”
Yes, you see, they are so brazen that they don’t care that we know this is an attempt to steal the election for Prosser and make it difficult for Kloppenburg to pay for a statewide recount:
In WI, an automatic recount at state-expense is triggered if an election is within .5%, and we have a fully verifiable paper trail to audit election results. That means in this election with approximately 740k for Kloppenburg and 739k for Prosser, the vote gets recounted at state-expense if the election is within ~7400 votes.
So the last 2 days the WI-GOP has been scrambling trying to figure out how they can still get Prosser into office. What was the result of their brain-storming? Add a few extra votes in a friendly area (Waukesha), and call it a clerical error. But in order to steal the election, they NEED to be able to keep a recount from occurring, because a recount would expose their attempted fraud to the light of day.
So they couldn’t just give Prosser a couple hundred to put him barely in the lead by 40. They had to give him more than 7500 in order to get above the threshold for automatic recount, so that the only way for a recount to happen would be if Kloppenburg ponies up the money for a state-wide recount, which could be expensive. Granted, all of us in WI would be happy to donate to a potential recount effort if it gets to that point, but the resolve of the Kloppenburg camp remains to be seen.
How very convenient that the only county in which the Republican County Clerk uses her personal computer to collect the election results suddenly discovers, after Prosser lost the race by 204 votes, on her personal computer, just enough previously unreported votes for Prosser to make him the winner, and not by a slim margin, but by one large enough to make a recount extremely costly and difficult.
I don’t know about you, but I can smell the stink of this blatant attempt at corruption and fraud in Wisconsin by the Republicans all the way over in Western New York where I live. Hell I bet that you could can smell it in Hawaii, too.
And you know what they say about not passing the smell test …
It’s hard to see any way that this will pass even the most cursory of chain of evidence searches. Hopefully, her pc is already in the hands of the FBI.
If indeed the worst has happened and she did manipulate the voting results she will have wrought severe damage to the State’s Republican Party. Wonder what the jail time is for this.
Jail time? She’ll be on Prosser’s staff inside of 6 weeks…
The FBI should act quickly here and gather up potential evidence, but I’m betting on their dragging their feet, giving long, slow telegraphs of their moves, so that the GOPers have all the time they need to eliminate the incriminating evidence.
Don’t assume the FBI is ready, willing or able to defend the interests of Blind Justice. I”ll wait and see what their actions show before I move toward their ‘side’…I’m old enough to remember J Edgar Hoover–no paragon of Liberal thought, he….
You trust the FBI!!!???
Lord.
What fools these mortals be.
“Federal.”
Another word for “crooked.”
“Bureau.”
Another word for “incompetent.”
“Investigation.”
In the PermaGov, Another word for “coverup.”
Oughta rename it the CIC.
Bet on it.
What percentage of Republicans (and people w/even further rightward sympathies) do you think comprises the FBI? Up and down the system. Is it possible to answer that question w/a percentage greater than 100%?
I think so.
Wake the fuck up.
The entire government is rotten to the core.
Bet on that as well.
The Federal Gonerment.
Gone.
Shutdown?
We’d be better off if it would shut down.
But of course…it won’t.
Too much hustle would be lost.
Watch.
A shadowplay shutdown.
Watch.
Disgusting.
AG
And she has been involved in criminal behavior in the past. She was given immunity to testify. In fact, Prosser was once her boss.
this is who they are.
I’m expecting that nothing will be done… I don’t underestimate my Party’s ability to fuck me in the ass, just to chortle among themselves that they got to punch another hippy.
Carlin was a Prophet…and right. You DO have to be asleep to believe this American Dream
I don’t see how this is an example of the Democratic Party fucking you in the ass. Whatever…
You don’t?
You will.
It rolled over in the Fed elections of 2000 + 2004.
Why would you think it won’t roll over now?
Watch.
Weak.
S.
Just a few chad hanging around after the election? What, they cruised down to the corner bar to knock back a few while they were waiting their turn to be counted?
I’m willing to bet that more than a few people outside as well as within Wisconsin will be lining up to contribute to a recount fund.
I’m in.

(A friend of mine in Wisconsin who’s a computer programmer noticed the same thing.)
Thanks for the link. This is absolutely unbelievable. How can any country have a voting system where partisan local officials are in charge of running any aspect of the election system, much less counting the votes? I know that it was a Wisconsin state election, but essentially the same problem exists with US elections for Congress and President. If this happened in Cote D’Ivoire you’d have UN denunciation of the result for its lack of credibility.
that is so ridiculous – why didn’t they do it the way Hoboken 2-day mayor Peter Cammarano did, find a box of absentee ballots in the backyard???!!!
Yes, please send UN observers!!!!
And they only needed 7,500 – what’s with the 82?
The right-wing blogs from election night and the day after were full of nothing but endless accusations of fraud and predictions that union thugs would produce boxes of “misplaced” ballots. This, however, is entirely different because shut up.
Projection…I notice it a lot among right-wingers.
There are two months of the regular academic year left at UW. Most likely it will be difficult to occupy the capitol 24/7 after that.
Causing fundraising for a recount means money gets diverted from recall.
And the Supreme Court that would review the recount includess — David Prosser.
It looks like they have successfully stolen another one.
Now, if Waukesha County uses all paper ballots and they haven’t been destroyed (the next thing to watch for–oops a fire), it should be possible to recount just those ballots. But paper ballots were the first way of stealing elections and were one of the things that cause the rise of the first Progressive movement.
They use touchscreen e-voting.
With or without paper trails.
“But paper ballots were the first way of stealing elections and were one of the things that cause the rise of the first Progressive movement. “
Election of judges, (co)incidentally, was part of the Progressive package, along with the initiative and referendum process.
History is funny that way.
Election of judges is an alternative to elected officials appointing judges. Take your pick. Election provides direct public input if they use the opportunity well and have good information about who the candidates are. And the referendum process only recently got megabuck advertising and suppression tactics intended to serve vested interests by locking in provisions to frustrate the will of the people.
The problem is not the direct democracy in the reforms but the dishonest information that shapes decisions.
Here’s my own article re this today, at Consortium News:

Good job.
Yes, nicely done Lisa. Thanks for sharing it here.
