First: This is not a Pie War sequel. And I would crosspost to Kos but do not wish to start a “Volleyball” war. Also, I am not attacking anyone.
BUT, does anyone else think that maybe those ads are planted to cause a divide in our ranks?
I am serious. If this is really happening, maybe we need to show Kos some support. No Armando bashing, no mention of pies or of volleyball, but a quiet show of support by showing up more often, posting, or whatever. And ignore the ads.
No Kos is doing the dividing all by himself.
He is insisting on displaying this shit. I see that the women Democratic candidate has pulled her ad.
Not a very nice place for women politicians to place ads between bikinis and a twit ranting about the evils of NARAL protecting women’s reproductive freedoms.
Why would Kos allow that then? His whole focus is getting Democrats elected. Why would he alienate a majority of Democrats?
I’m very confused about this.
Is it stubborness? An inability to admit a mistake?
YUP
Did the “woman candidate” “pull” her ad – or is the ad run just over?
Honestly I never even saw the candidates ad – but there are an awful lot of assumptions being made here. This thread also has little to do with BT – if I wanted to discuss and debate dKos, I’d go there…
(oh – and there are already a number of diaries discussing this on dKos, at least 3 I saw yesterday)
I apologize for posting this here, but I just don’t want to start another war. I was just looking to see if anyone thought that there might be another (GOP) hand in the advertising. I saw one diary on Kos about the ad, but have been thinking about this for awhile. Kos is the most visible of our communities to the GOP, it is the likeliest first target to divide and discredit.
I also wonder if all those “Christian” e-mails that go around are straight out of a GOP think tank.
If I’m being tinfoil-y, or if there might be something to my suspicions.
Dont confuse politics with finances. Its irrelevant who runs the ads. The ads are placed to make money. Someone who makes ad buying decisions thinks DKOS audience consists of horny young males or they think all the young females will admire the volleyball player for her physical strength and athletic skills.
If only they knew the truth: The entire left blogoshphere consists of 40-60 year old worn out lefties from the sixties, both male and female, who dont have the energy to march much so we type instead.
The females are offended by the ads; the males have seen more of it all in other places. Its no big deal, really, is it? Its a variation of the same theme that runs around the Sports Illustrtaed swimsuit issue.
For the preceding 50 years….and they say the human
DKOS just attracts the opposite of right wing theocrats. Left wing theocrats. The theocracy of “issues.”
Poor marketing skills is the answer to your question, inmy humble opinion…
volleyball ad is inappropriate for Markos to display?
I’m asking your opinion, not making an argument.
I have to make decisions about accepting ads too. And I would have been surprised to see such an submitted, by I don’t see anything offensive or sexist about it. I mean, obviously they are making it clear that an attractive volleyball player is going to be TV wearing beach volleyball clothes.
But so much advertising uses sex appeal (both male and female). The Gilligan’s Island seemed to be both stupider and more prurient.
Anyway, I’m asking your sincere opinion.
I’m really not sure how I feel about it, to be honest. I guess I lean more to the offended just because of the line “I will lay out for every ball”. It seems to go over the top with that one.
I’m no prude, but being a woman I am sick of having my gender objectified.
I guess I’m not a lot of help here, sorry. This is an issue that I am still thinking about. I went through the “pie wars” and saw what that did to the Kos community. When I saw this ad it made me think that someone may be trying to do that again.
How would you feel opening that page in front of female collegues?
A few people have stated that they were asked to close that page in the office so that they would not offend women in the office.
I even opened it while travelling in a internet cafe and felt self conscious.
It’s designed to advertise dominance, to make people either uncomfortable and encourage them to go away, or to encourage “in group” banter for those who are of the same mindset.
This is the best articulation of how the bikini pics effect a site.
How could they put ads on Kos? I mean, I know they could hack the site, but wouldn’t Markos blog about it loudly?
Well I don’t think the GOP would be trying to be obvious about it. Just place an ad, through NBC, that could spark a divide.
I don’t put anything past them, they leave no stone unturned.
Well I don’t think the GOP would be trying to be obvious about it.
Republicans aren’t this bright or subtle and besides, your notions of responsibility are askew. The ads, the FP posts, the encouragement of the religious right, the contempt for the opinions of people who find the ads tacky, the attacks on one specific ‘special interest’ and the sexism are Kos (and a good many other folks on that blog, not to mention that significant portion of the Democratic ‘leadership’ that has decided to roll over like sleeping puppies on Roe) Look, you’re talking about a guy who believes that abortion is “reprehensible” and that a man repeatedly trying to force his wife to engage in exibitionistic sexual displays at clubs created for this purpose is “just a little sexcapade”.
DKos has never been a place where women and the women’s vote has been taken seriously (indeed as the Democratic party moves further to the right the votes of women, unless they’re conservatives, have been ignored more every cycle. (see John Kerry)This is a problem at the blog and within the Democratic party and one which the GOP (who have been taking the women’s vote very seriously) is prepared to profit from.
I still post at Kos occasionally, but frankly, I don’t have the same spirit as I did during the election for the blog. Maybe it will return, but I don’t know for sure.
There is something else, too. Latinos are, by and large, from very masculinist cultures. So are, for that matter, those men from countries facing the Mediterranean. They don’t like to bend.
I know Kos has written that he can’t be the end-all be-all for everyone. But dogging the democratic left, Boomers, women, the old counterculture, and others is not giving him brownie points, at least with me. Undoubtedly, mistakes were made during that time, but frankly, popping off how different he are from my generation is beginning to tick me. My belief is that we made him possible. How?
Every movement appears to love dissing its predecessors without acknowledging the roots from which they sprang and their inherent commonality. Makes me think that within 15 more years, he’ll be sounding just like Novakula or any one of our current opponents. Not good. Not very good at all to contemplate.
With all due respect, I believe that it is tin foil hat time. These ads, unlike the pie ads, depict real volleyball players playing real volleyball, and not scenes from some sad reality show. (And the women are wearing outfits typically worn at the games.) Repugs couldn’t be this subtle. After all, the women depicted are obviously well-trained athletes, not porn stars.
Parker’s DLC diary for a little more perspective on the current state of the Democratic party.
