So many of you have met CODE PINK through Camp Casey. I thought you’d like to see what they did in 2003. The entire Picasso image and “Peace Now” is created by human beings. My friend Other Lisa, who knows many of the Code Pink founders, dug up this photo for me, and writes the following:
It was February 15, 2003, on the beach at Santa Monica. There were demonstrations all around the world aimed at stopping the war before it started. I think this was the last time I felt the least bit of optimism that we might be able to head the thing off; the good energy was palpable. We marched from Venice Beach to Santa Monica, where there was a stage and a rally attended by several thousand people. It was a beautiful, warm day…

By the way, Lisa — whose blog is The Paper Tiger — helped edit a book, Twilight of Empire : Responses to Occupation, by Code Pink founder Jodie Evans that includes essays by Joseph Wilson, Christian Parenti, Amy Goodman, Medea Benjamin and more, and poetry by Viggo Mortenson (who visited Camp Casey on Wednesday). Amazon link. Lisa says that the photographs in the book are absolutely stunning.
Other Lisa just sent me this link: Jodie Evans: On Camp Casey…, published today.
Susan gives me too much credit – best description of what I did was I was a contributing editor. The book’s actual editors were Pilar Perez and Viggo Mortenson.
And the photos are indeed stunning.
Oh pooh … I remember when you were editing that. You worked for weeks on that book!
I’m SO relieved you had those photos. Hope Code Pink puts them back on their site.
For the life of me I can’t remember this so thanks for the posting susan. Gives some more momentum and hope I think.
And I’m glad you mentioned Lisa again, I linked to her blog before because of you and saved it but I get so caught up here and at Eurotrib I forget to do anything else.
As for Viggo..funny that I didn’t know much about him but started seeing him in my entertainment mags and wearing ‘no blood for oil’ pins or t-shirts( and that he painted and wrote poetry) before Iraq invasion and that got me interested in him and it turns out he’s a dam fine actor also(and easy on the eyes).
When shall we break it to Tracy and Brinnaine that they missed seeing Viggo in person by a day?!
Lisa’s blog is great. She’s a very good writer.
Some things are better left unsaid -that might be just to cruel…got my heart going just thinking he was there-Pretty cool he was there.
I once missed Mick Jagger by a day in a fish restaurant in Essouira, Morocco. (Not that I particularly care for Jagger – Stones is the most over-hyped band in history by my lights…)
Well thank god there’s someone else who doesn’t bow down to Jagger and the Stones.
You are much too kind! Would that I had a fraction of your productivity, Susan…
The weird thing, looking back on “Twilight,” is how very prescient the book is. I guess “prescient” isn’t the best choice of words, given that what has happened in Iraq was pretty much predicted right down the line by those who knew better. “Twilight” is full of material that pretty much nailed what would happen in Iraq as a result of the invasion & occupation. Being right ahead of time is a pale consolation…
Prescient is right … i still haven’t read Frank Rich’s column but, from what others here are saying, it’s OVER …
Oh yeah, productivity, Miss Lisa who writes novels, keeps a daily blog, edits books, writes and researches all day …
P.S. check out Kid Oakland’s diary — it’s in the recommended list — wonderful
I think as susan says you’re being to modest..I remember reading several of your diaries to do with China and they are terrific. Makes me feel like I’m getting a real look at the people there and what is going on in the country, the culture.
I will try and remember to link more often. I also wish now I had a copy of the book.
Chocolate Ink, many thanks. I think the book is still available at Amazon. It’s a nice price too!
Yes, I just had linked to Amazon to check it out..
The book can be bought on the Code Pink website also…it is 9 dollars cheaper at Amazon but for anyone with more discretionary money to spend it would be worth it to buy it through the Code Pink site…where it is $20.00.
Yeah, those day jobs are so damn time consuming…
oh my god, what another great story. Cindy Sheehan is one amazing dam woman. Everyone just follow the link and read the short post. As all these women are that are out there and the men also.
Bush should certainly take lessons in how to deal with someone who may not have your views from her-this pertains to how she related to the young soldier who told her her son’s death was just a drop in the bucket and for a greater cause of freedom….
Then again bush could take all the ‘lessons’ in the world and he just wouldn’t get it..he doesn’t have the courage and compassion to do anything remotely like this.
Wow! I haven’t finished reading it yet. Here is a photo of Jodie Evans .. i’ll try to find more.
CodePink activist Jodie Evans was kicked out of the Republican National Convention after protesting the war in Iraq.
Oh my god…. what a story. We can’t say much to spoil it.
It’s just beautiful.
I read that last night susan and I really hope everyone clicks on that link and reads this…really amazing..very short article but is really a must read.
It’s called “How to Stop the Next War Now” – you can probably get it through the Code Pink website but here’s a link to Amazon.
Have you read it, Lisa? Maybe you could review it?
Silly me – of course you can get the new book at Code Pink – but I didn’t know you could get Twilight there as well. Definitely buy it through Code Pink – Amazon takes huge percentages of book sales, and anything extra through Code Pink helps keep all those great women in pink umbrellas – and traveling to places like Crawford TX.
I have not read the new book yet – bad me…I will read it and get back to you all…

Should Cindy Sheehan accept Pres. Bush’s response and go home?
