I’m live blogging from the Constitution Center. Hillary Clinton is speaking here at an American Democracy Institute event.
Before and after the plenary, we will hold a series of leadership development workshops where participants and local and national leaders will discuss and debate current issues. Workshop topics will include voting rights; the role of media in politics; faith and public policy; the constitution in the 21st century; and youth activism.
I’m set off to the side here, with Albert from DragonBallYee and Tulin of
PoliticsPhiilly . There are a few other bloggers here. But f-ing Duncan got a second row seat.
for some of the topics? Thanks.
Okay Mary:
Featured Speakers:
John Hart- Pres. and CEO of American Democracy Institute.
Sean Wilentz- History Prof at Princeton
Gene R. Nichol Pres. of William & Mary
Hillary
Then a networking and Organization Fair
with a lunch workshop on:
the constitution in the 21st century (yeah right)
empowering youth, improving communities
faith and public policy
role of media in politics
voting rights- crisis in the American election system (yeah, we keep electing the loser)
student media briefing.
that other than Hillary I do not know anything about the other speakers. I hope they are good for your sake!
Speaking now: Sean Wilentz of The New Republic and Princeton University.
He’s talking a guy named Luther Baldwin, who was in his local bar in Newark, NJ, in 1798 and said John Adams “should got shot in the arse” and was prosecuted under the Alien and Sedition Act
From Common Dreams:
Why don’t you pull a Judy Miller and tell Duncan that he’s sitting in YOUR seat.
the said any public protest without a permit was banned.
So your saying the free speech area is somewhere in the basement?? (humor)
this is not the right venue for disruption. It’s an invitation only gig, its basically non-partisan, although she is talking progressive politics now…
I would be very interested to see how else is going to speak. Hill is doing this for her run, you know…we can expect more of this in the future.
the crowd here is made up of “hundreds of young people, ages 16 to 35, from local high xchools, colleges, universities, and community and technical colleges, community groups and young professionals organizations”.
The demographic LEAST likely to vote. Wonder why Hill’s wasting her important time on them.
they will vote eventually. Actually I think these people that are here are definitely voters. And they like BillHill.
Now speaking: Gene R. Nichol of William & Mary.
He’s giving a speech about Brown v. Board of Education, lack of health care, school segregation. Pretty progressive speech.
The William and Mary dude got a standing O.
Hillary is coming on now.
People on their feet.
Albert is getting some photos. Albert rocks.
He’ll have them up later I’m sure
it’s true, i do rock. they’re up here
and not one picture of me!!
Those are great photos, Albert.
she is thanking everybody.
She is the honorary chair of the ADI’s Youth Initiative Program, she was shocked but honored to be offered that position.
She wants to expand the circle yada yada
Hillary is asked how many of the audience is a public servent (by standing). About 8%.
BTW- I am completely 100% lined up with the clock on Independence Hall, I’m looking directly at it from my seat here down the mall.
Okay. The speeech is pretty much a peptalk to young people to make a difference, get involved, make the world safer for their children.
Is she a good speaker or does she sound like its all prepard and she’s just good at reading it?
It looks like she is giving this speech without any teleprompter or notes. She gives a very good speech. Her voice occassionally can be a little grating at high volumes. Other than that, she is very polished.
People are paying attention.
Hillary has a kind of pinkish pantcoat with a very erect collar. She looks fashionable.
You and your pantsuit fetish. If you decide to retire from bloggin we’ll recommend you for fashion editor at the Times.
I didn’t want to bring it up again but there does seem to be a pattern developing here ;o)
I thought it’s get her goat.
so, why is anyone surprised?
Now THAT’S funny.
all she seems to wear these days. It’s almost like a uniform, smooths over her bulging hips and thighs and covers the sagging neck. She must have one in every color that looks good on her.
I cannot blame her for that. There are many things I like about Hillary — especially that she’s pragmatic and practical.
I basically wear the same thing everyday, just different colors. I do the Kate Hepburn thing with turned up collars to hide my neck.
I’m wearing my winter blogging uniform today: stylish chartreuse longjohns, topped by a snappy pair of black baggy sweat pants, combined with the ever-classic 3-layer long-sleeved t-shirt with fleece on top. And one mustn’t forget the two pairs of socks and the big flat house shoes that only a clown’s mother could love.
And now I, too, will raise my collar in solidarity with you, sjct. Thanks for the fashion tip! (If only it was because of fashion, lol.)
Best line: “They (the administration) are trying to turn this into an evidence free government.”
She’s waxing eloquent. Must be wrapping up… Yup. God bless us. Standing O.
On-the-scene reporting is good. Will there be Q&A?
Thanks for the updates.
BTW — did you see what color shoes she wears with the pink suit? Basic black or is she more adventurous?
her shoes should be dyed to match the pantsuit.
She should. Barbie would. But Hill is probably too practical.
Of course, unlike me, she probably doesn’t have to carry her own luggage. She could, if she wanted, have a whole suitcase devoted to shoes.
Nah
What about the purse?
and what kind of jewelry does she have on?
did she really say that?
Triangulation sucks.
We couldn’t get wireless in this part of the building, so I plugged in. But they tell me I can get a wireless connection downstairs, and I’m moving down there now.
Maybe I’ll have more to say from here, maybe not.
I’ve seen Hil speak…and Bill…neither uses notes and they know how to hold a room.
One thing everyone is neglecting about the ’08 run is the persona and ability to grab a crowd. Ideology is where we are are focused now, and Hil ain’t popular in these parts because of it…but, mark my words, when the rubber starts meeting the road, she’s going to be a force to contend with, because she’s smart and can give a speach…not unlike BC.
The dems ought to schedule primary debate/speeches in outstate Missouri. Then we’ll see what she’s made of. They absolutely LOATHE her. It’s hard for me to even fathom the magnitude of their loathing. But its there. If she could raise them to “neutral” about her — then we’d know she might have a chance.
But can she say the invasion of Iraq was a mistake?
Can she say a flag burning amendment is unAmerican?
When she starts taking positions on issues, she’ll get my attention.
What, you want substance and principle?
I guess Ed isn’t impressed by her pink pantsuit. Maybe he needs to have a talk with Booman.
She’s taking those positions to appeal to those red outstate Missouri type people who loathe her. It won’t work. Because they all get their news from Rush.
.
a chance to ask Hillary a question tomorrow.
I asked people around Philly tonight what a good question would be. But the suggestions were all ummentionable, so I’ll ask you non-barbarians.

Why Pass Bush & Neocons on the Right?
Hillary Clinton Speech at Princeton on 19 January -- "I believe that we lost critical time in dealing with Iran because the White House chose to downplay the threats and to outsource the negotiations".

Contrary to view of NyBri above, I would not invest in a campaign for Hillary Clinton or for John Kerry. The Democrats should not look to the past and relive the same shortcomings of the Clinton era, Bill’s presidential troubles, and the failure of Kerry in 2004. The Democrats and grassroot support should clean house, look forward in an optimistic manner with a new candidate and fresh style of campaigning.
In the last fifty years, which candidates won the Presidency as a Democrat and in what campaign style?
1960 John F. Kennedy vs. Richard M. Nixon
1964 Lyndon B. Johnson (I) vs. Barry Goldwater
1976 Jimmy Carter vs. Gerald Ford (I)
1992 Bill Clinton vs. George H. Bush (I) –
1996 Bill Clinton (I) vs Bob Dole
Only chance for the Democrats is to run with a surprise candidate, young, integer¹ and with experience in leadership from Congress or as State Governor. See also political discussion @BooMan here and here.

recognition, so I wouldn’t rule out those from the past. Lincoln lost a few before he was made president. We learn from mistakes as well.
