I think I’m too damn tired to cook…wonder if I can talk the spouse into a mission out to get dinner? In the mood for sandwiches for some reason — I think I burned at least 200 calories wrestling with this damn desk…
My beloved Cleveland Indians. As a child I had a scorepad and an AM radio and I used to listen to Herb Score call every. single. game. sitting on the glider on the screen porch, keeping score. Back then you could take a bus down to the stadium and sit in the bleachers for 50 cents for a Sunday doubleheader.
Someone mentioned Dave Duncan the other day. I remember a young (and homely) Dave Duncan trying to pick up me and my friend on the beach when he was the catcher for the Indians in the 70’s.
Even now, the start of spring training signals a new season of hope for me, even though the Tribe is back to being perenially bad. Sigh. I will get back to Jacobs Field for a home game this year. I will.
My very favorite aunt (another woman I always wished was my mother) lives in Clayton. Is that near you? At least I think it’s Clayton – I guess I should make sure.
She probably lives within a 2 mile radius of my office. Clayton isn’t that big. It has a downtown area with high rise office buildings and then is completely surrounded by really nice nice residential areas. It has no industry. So its just office buildings, restaurants, art galleries and houses. It’s a nice place to live, I used to live there too. But then I decided I just couldn’t both live and work in Clayton. When I worked downtown I felt like I was connected to reality even if I came home to Clayton at night. Once I worked in Clayton I felt like a stepford wife. It’s like being in Disneyland. You never see homeless people. You never really see low income people unless they are going to the courthouse. So I moved back into the city near where I grew up.
Yeah, Clayton’s upscale. I didn’t own a house when I lived there. I couldn’t have afforded it. A lot of WASP Republicans live in Clayton. But there are also a lot of Catholic and Jewish Democrats. What there aren’t are many African Americans, Asian Americans Arab Americans.
My best memories of my father are of two us sitting around this big gray radio listening to cubs games. Sometimes I think I like hearing baseball on the radio better than watching it television.
Baseball is so much better on the radio. I grew up listening to Jack Buck and he was like a part of my family. Everyone felt that way. I used to think it would be great to have his job, but impossible. After all, how many women play by play announcers are there?
I always wondered what the big attraction was about Harry Carey. Although I guess he was a character. I’m too young to remember when he announced for the Cardinals.
Both of my sisters are big cubs fans. One still lives in Chicago, the other one moved back last summer but swears she will never break her allegiance to the cubs.
I’ve been a cubs fan all my life (I think it was part of the DNA I got from my father) — which is handy because it teaches you how to deal with suffering.
Oh well, I’m going to go read a bit and then head off to bed. Good night.
Me either. But at Jacobs field on Sundays they have a female announcer and her voice just grates on my nerves. And those sideline announcers at NFL games just seem like cheerleaders to me.
I probably wouldn’t like her either. I don’t like most of the men announcers. But somehow men manage to pull off sounding stupid better than women do. Or maybe I just hold women to a higher standard. Which is stupid of me.
I seriously considered applying for the ballpark P.A. announcer job with the Rockies back when the team first came to town, but I chickened out.
One of my life’s highlights was filling in for a friend as P.A. announcer for a game between the Springfield Redbirds (at that time the Cardinals AAA team) and the Iowa Cubs. I’d been a radio newscaster for several years at that point, so I’d like to think I didn’t sound too bad. 😉
I loved those minor league games! My ex and I had season tickets. Someone once suggested that he and I (he was also a radio person) should broadcast the games–with him as color announcer and me doing off-color.
My dad was one of your principals (well, depending on when you graduated he could have been one of your math teachers but I bet you’re not old enough.)
I think I’m too damn tired to cook…wonder if I can talk the spouse into a mission out to get dinner? In the mood for sandwiches for some reason — I think I burned at least 200 calories wrestling with this damn desk…
I’m glad everyone here recognizes that it’s all about me all the time 😉
AND pitchers and catchers reported today! (I saw your comment earlier today when I was in lurk phase). Yes its a happy day.
Now you’re talking my language! Curling, skiing, hockey…feh. For me it’s all beeeessssbol all the time.
There’s yet another thing we have in common. I swear one of us must have been the other one in another life.

That was me and Dave is still homely.

Guess what — I work in Clayton. It’s where I lurk from every day.
She lives on Meramec or something like that.

They’re pretty wealthy. He’s retired from banking and does consulting now. I remember seeing their house once and it’s awesome.

They’re WASP Democrats. At least that’s something…

Jack Brickhouse was my favorite cubs announcer and so much better than the overrated Harry Carey.
I always wondered what the big attraction was about Harry Carey. Although I guess he was a character. I’m too young to remember when he announced for the Cardinals.

Did you ever see Will Ferrell do Harry Carey? Hilarious.

I hate myself for saying this, but I hate women announcers. There I said it.
heh
feel better for being truthful?
I can’t really think of any women baseball announcers off the top of my head?
Me either. But at Jacobs field on Sundays they have a female announcer and her voice just grates on my nerves. And those sideline announcers at NFL games just seem like cheerleaders to me.
what does she announce? On the radio/tv or inside the stadium?
Inside the stadium. You know….Maaannnnnnyyyyyyyy Rameeeeeeeeeeeeeeerez! Back when he was an Indian of course.
I probably wouldn’t like her either. I don’t like most of the men announcers. But somehow men manage to pull off sounding stupid better than women do. Or maybe I just hold women to a higher standard. Which is stupid of me.
lol Curling is more xciting than baseball and we all know what I think about curling.
The Giants have had a female field announcer for, well, I bet it’s close to a decade. I like her.

Yeah, we all miss Jack Buck. He truly was one of the great ones. FWIW, I went to high school with one of his kids.
I assume it wasn’t Joe?
Where’d you go to highschool?
No, Bonnie. Ladue High.
My dad was one of your principals (well, depending on when you graduated he could have been one of your math teachers but I bet you’re not old enough.)
Dr. B?
Math teacher. I’ll be damned.
You’re older than I expected. NOT that there’s anything wrong with that. 🙂
What year did you graduate?
1974. Send me an email at
brittpbb at yahoo dot com
and I’ll tell you more. (BTW, all this email address will reveal is that I’m a Rocky and Bullwinkle fan).
ok
Spring training. I just got in from an interminable Little League coaches’ meeting. This must be the chattiest group of men I’ve ever known.
Little League coaches are renowned for being chatty cathies 🙂
Spouse just called to ask if I wanted him to stop for dinner on the way home…it seems like the longer we’re together, the more in tune we are. 😉
