Hey! How is everything going?
ça va.
Actually, I’m in a fine Wednesday grump — I’m ready for the heat to be over, I’m ready for the day to be over, I’m ready for the week to be over.
Anything of interest in the WSJ?
Not as of now…just the typical business news stories.
Ah, that kind of bug. I thought you meant that the NSA was listening in.
Just like birds, insects rarely hold still enough for me to get a pic so I’m rather pleased with that one.
I’d like to think the NSA was bugging my conversations — then I could bore them to death.
It is a fine evening here. I had a massage earlier in the day, and now I’m about to take a warm bath to relax and to get the massage oil off my skin and out of my hair.
Here’s one of our local beetles, for your perusal. It’s some sort of Christmas Beetle, but I have yet to figure out which one.

being eaten by a carnivorous plant (movement was not a problem).
Great colors on that Christmas beetle.
I’m trying to work up some sympathy for this bug — so far, not happening.
It’s hard to work up empathy for flies. Although I will admit to a “super power,” I can catch flies with my hand. Really, and not just occasionally. It’s pretty much automatic – see fly, catch fly. I had pet geckos for several years, and they loved live flies, so I caught them.
So the flies in our house simply get relocated outside.
I never was fast enough to catch flies and our flies seem to laugh at a fly swatter. I’ve go a canister vacuum cleaner and I just chase them around with that. Oddly enough it works pretty well.
Vacuuming bugs is a tried and true approach. At our house, many a spider has met its untimely end via a vacuum nozzle.
All spiders are welcome to stay at our place but I love sweeping up the invasive asian ladybugs.
I like spiders, and generally leave them be. But when the cobwebs seem to be taking over the place (and we look like we’re dressing up for Halloween), there has to be a cull.
Actually I’ve just started doing the vacuum thing. It’s a lot easier and less messy. A true slackers alternative. 🙂
You can be certain they are listening, with computers in any case. So the chances of boring a human are small. 😉
Good morning Andi, Psi and Keres.
What exciting stuff are you going to do in The Big City?
Grocery shopping. Believe it or not, I like grocery shopping. However, I don’t like the loading everything into the car and then unpacking the car and putting everything away. Give me the excitement of buying a can of beans. 🙂
Mornin’…how goes it for you?
Morning Psi. Are you finally getting over those achy muscles?
I just noticed something that has me all a flutter. Andi Powells has Kabul in Winter recommended by you!
I was thinking that’s really great and then I look down farther and see James Herriot recommended by me.
I don’t know what to say. I’m honored.
And then from ask’s backpack too. Is there no end to the great things here?
You’ve just noticed that our book conversations are bugged by CG?
I told you before, I’m slow. But geez that gives me a boost today. 🙂
Okay — happy driving and grocery shopping.
I’m off to walk before the heat gets too awful.
See ya later.
See ya Andi. Have a good day.
I’ve got to get ready and then head out for the city.
Everybody have a good day in the pond.
Imogen took this photo when we were in Western Australia. We were in a canyon in the Pilbarra region, whose sides were nearly pure iron ore. It had magical marshy ponds in the bottom.
The soil here was so red with rust that our clothes and skin were stained for weeks thereafter.
The pond picture is just lovely and very evocative.
The walls of the canyon look very much like something you would find in southern Utah.
That little guy is just covered in pollen … 🙂
The original photo isn’t that good but I realized I could crop it down and make something better out of it.
BTW, I think my friend said the flower is called an althea (it’s on a bush). Does that sound right?
And cropping does make a photo better sometimes b/c the file sizes are so large we don’t lose that much in quality right … 🙂
I’m off to work … another hot day here (41C) … Hope you have a good day.
I’m surprised no one has come and mined that yet – and thank goodness. Gorgeous! Loved the dragonfly too.
Good morning all! Finally, the heat has relented. I’m hoping that the many green tomatoes on my vines finally start to ripen.
Here’s to ripening tomatoes … 🙂
Hi Olivia! How about a close up of a ripening tomato? 😉
What kind of camera to you have … 😉
Or how about this: You could do a series … pick a nice looking speciment and take a pic every day at about the same time until it’s ripened and sliced up on your cutting board!
What do you think … ? 🙂
Maybe I’ll just paint one instead.
Hope y’all can stay cool today. We’re still under 85 for another day then it’s supposed to heat up. Peppers and tomatoes are cheering, people and critters are whining.
Another nearly sleepless night-wish I had an insomnia solution that worked. The bossis due here any minute so I’d best jump on the lawnmower and go.
Hellllooooo, anybody around?
I got to the city and as usual got more groceries than I had intended to. It took me awhile to unpack the car and put away everything. Eventhough I rationalize about getting more than I planned to, I look at it as, it’s a long trip, gas is high and you never have enough pop tarts.
I’m sure you picked up a lot of good health food at the grocery.
Hi Andi. Ya betcha I got healthy food.
Sutff for making gallons of ice cream is pretty healthy isn’t it?
I was in Copenhagen once and looking for pastries to take home to Jim that could survive the long flight home and commented to the woman helping me pick that if I stayed in town very long I would probably die of a heart attack from all the wonderful goodies.
She looked at me with such wonderful wide-eyed shock and said “But it’s all food that is good for you — cream, eggs, butter …”
I like that woman. Great minds. 🙂
I’m eating lunch too … Nothing as good as ice cream though … 🙂
Hi Olivia. No ice cream yet. That probably won’t be until tomorrow or the next day. What cha having for lunch, a chocolate candy bar. 🙂
Did you buy some ready made to hold you over … 😉
I’m having a vegetable wrap and a big glass of chocolate milk … 🙂 What about you?
It’s hot there for you … I just checked. Says it’s 97 w/ t-storms and tomorrow will be 101.
Actually I haven’t eaten anything yet today. Once I get up from the computer, I’ve got a lot more stuff to do and if I eat, it’s nap time. 🙂
Yes it’s staying pretty hot here and if there’s supposed to be rain, I don’t see it in that clear blue sky. Hope you’re enjoying your ac and it doesn’t get too hot for you tonight.
It’s noon and you haven’t eaten anything yet?
You better eat something soon … at least make sure you’re drinking or something.
I’m glad you’re skies are clear blue … Have good rest of day and see ya later.
I don’t actually eat lunch — sometime between 10 and 1 I just go scrounge through the fridge and the pantry for whatever is available (bread, cheese, fruit, veggies).
Hope you are having a nice day in the AC.
That I have a sweater on … kind of obscene isn’t it.
Sounds like a good lunch … but ice cream would make is great.
Are you staying cool?
not really a lunch — it’s more like a piece of bread at 10, sharing a piece of cheese with the dogs at 11, eating some carrots at noon. I suspect it would be better if I actually picked at a single time and at something that looked more like a meal.
as long as I don’t go outside, I’m cool enough
Either that’s a LG piece of cheese you shared or you all had a teeny bit … and I guess it’s better than FM who hasn’t eaten anything. You guys …
I’m off again. Stay kewl … 😉
Good gravy Marie, don’t you realize that of all the people who ate pickles during the Civil War, hot a one of them is alive today??
Get that thing off the plate right now!!
Gotta get started getting some more stuff done.
See ya’ll later.
How are things today? (I mean, besides that. Oh, and that. Other than those. How are things?)
I’m just hanging out for the morning. This afternoon we’re going to go see Doc Watson perform over at the Zoo (the same series we saw Arlo Guthrie at a few weeks ago). I’ve never seen him in concert and only have a few of his songs. It should be a good show, though.
When you dial, they open a file
Funny animation.
hello! I’m a bit on the… weird side today. I’m kinda just sorta lurking. I don’t want to cause any ripples anywhere, especially in the pond. Ribbit.
Hahahaha . . . that’s funny.
I just sent it to my daughter along with the YouTube videos of Jon Stewart taking down Ted Stevens and the DJ remix of Tubin’ Ted’s “The Internet Is A Series Of Tubes” speech.
I just posted it on Sen Feingold’s thread. 🙂
Oh, fuck the ripples DJ. Who wants to go through life never causing ripples?
Well, lately I’ve been making some big “ripples” with some protests and stuff. There’s an instability balancing act one takes on within their own personal life when they “sign on” to undertaking such ripples.
I think I thought that doing more on the activism front would harden me… instead it’s caused me to be a bit more fragile. Well, I’ve always been a softy but you know what I mean. I thought maybe I would feel some sense of oh nevermind. I know I do things and things have been done.. but looking at the photos from Lebanon and more dead babies… I’m feeling a sense of urgency. A bigger need to do something… and all I can do is continue stepping forward – personally and politically. I’m just sad that it’s going to be with fewer people.
It’s a very tough balancing act – wanting to do whatever you can to stop the madness and still understanding that you alone can’t change the world. If you let yourself be too emotionally invested in things you are powerless to change it’ll destroy you.
But I think we do have the power to change things.
I know there’s a serenity prayer out there but I think the main thing is widsome and courage… and I see so many that just put their hands up in the air and say “it’s too much” or “we can’t exact change while Bush is in office”…
It’s crazy out here, man. I never thought in my life that I’d be ducking from thrown diet coke cans.
I no longer feel any sense of immediate respect for policemen. I now sense dread, caution, … fear.
I found that in order to strive for Peace I now live with the senses and feelings of a criminal. How fucked is that? LOL
Anyways thanks for listening. Just me trying to make sense of insane things again 🙂
Well, for instance, Lebanon. We know there are children being torn apart by rockets launched by zealots on both sides who have been feuding for centuries.
What personally can you do about that? You can cry, you can pull your hair out, you can watch the news 24/7. But what really can you do to influence the people who are conducting this terror?
I wish I knew because it makes me feel helpless. I tend to focus my efforts on places that I can really make a difference – like doing the volunteer work I do with abused and neglected kids. I won’t stop caring about atrocities across the globe and if I feel there’s something immediate I can do to affect real change I will do it. There is so much suffering in the world – too much for one person to internalize.
Those children are being slaughtered and today and tonight… many people in this country won’t even care.
That’s something we can change. We can bring the war photos into our living rooms, into our daily lives.
And that’s something that a portland group is going to be doing… almost like a Iraq Grief Witness diary but in “real life”.
That’s how change happens — you change one person’s mind and another and another. Some of those people go out and change another person’s mind. Keep focused on what you can do and trust in the good done by making one incremental step after another.
but why does all this mental Jujitsu give me so many blood blisters? 🙂
Because it’s easier to say than to do.
(((XOXOXOX))))
:*
(and I really miss you) but I’m glad DJ got you to reveal yourself. How are you, the sims, and the percocets doing?
I’ve been quietly around for most of the day today. I’m not feeling at all well, though. How you doin’? (I have missed you, too)
I am so sorry you are dealing with so much lately, baby.
I wish I could take some of the pain away.
But hey, I brought Manscaping as a topic in the cafe the other day… you woulda been proud 🙂
Manscaping, lol. You always make me laugh. I know you’ve been having a really hard time lately, too, and I hope you know that you have my ethereal support, such as it is, and that I believe in you and worry about you.
Sorry to hear that Indy! I hope things improve for you real soon … take a peek later as I hope to post more pretty flowers for the gang and I’ll have to dedicate at least one for you! Stay out of the heat and take care of yourself!
I will, thanks IVG. I’ve dropped by your groovy b on occasion but not often enough. Will do so when I’m feeling better.
I’m sorry, as always, to hear that. But I’m glad you’re able to delurk for a bit.
Is you doctor’s appointment this week or next?
It is Friday. I’ll let you know how things go. And I didn’t really mean to delurk, just couldn’t resist kissing the lovely and multi-talented DJ. 🙂 I’m off to have some food, haven;t been able to eat anything all day so i have to now. See you guys later. {{Cafe}}
Hi everyone — I’m here, but have been only sorta monitoring the comments since I’m afraid of bugs. Ahem.
I hope your day’s been nice. I’ll put up a happy hour shortly.
Our bugs are 100% certified FBC-safe.
Talk about mind numbing… the stuff I’m doing at work today is giving me major EGO (Eyes Glaze Over) syndrome … copying endless statistical stuff from SPSS into Excel time after time… Think I will need a break away from the computer screen tonight!
Hope you all are keeping cool as possible… middle coast weather update: 99 (actual) heat index of 112 and 77 dew point. All of which translates into miserable out there!
I’m going to snap a few pics when I get home tonight and hope to post a few of Olivia’s namesake if it is truly blooming today (and I think it will be) … the bud I posted in the hookah lounge last night if anyone’s interested. Otherwise, planning on staying out of the heat!
Oh, and I should be picking my first ripe tomato tomorrow! Earlier than usual, and I can’t wait! Take care all and special pink very firm hugs for {{{{{DJ}}}}}}! Hang in there babe, we love you!
Eyes glazed over.. have you started talking outloud to yourself?? 🙂 That happens here alot!
Thanks for the pink squeeze. Here’s one right back atcha!
Aww DJ, I could just pinch you! hehe thx for the hugs as well. Oh and yeah, I’ve been talking to myself since before I even learned to speak… has something to do with being born at age 57 or something like that, lol.
Oh, and no, I’m not 57 … just pulled that age out of some dusty orifice…
I ask, as someone who was born in 1950, is wrong with 57?
Actually, I didn’t aim that at you, Andi, honestly! Brain fried here… Nothing wrong with those folks, except the one who is my biological brother who shall not be named. My sister is 60 and she’s one of the coolest people I know!
Remember… fine wines analogy! See you later!
at your expense.
The happy hour cafe is open!
