Btw; I`m the fortunate one when it comes to Shane. Note his T shirt. He could give a dissertation on the animal on his shirt.
This little one is doing great. Hint: When feeding mealworms to animals, take the head off. The worms will bite & possibly harm these little animals, as they don`t chew their food. http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/9907/dayfourdscn0093zc0.jpg
That`s the perfect name for your state flower.
Since you may not be used to some of the critters I deal with, I`m including a mellow subject critter. The thing that may confuse some people when it comes to mellow, is the green stuff. It`s a Green Bubble Coral that this fish has claimed as it`s command post. These corals have not been spotted in the wilds of ND in many years. http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/4346/oscellarisbubbledscn0122id5.jpg
Been quite a day. One of my oldest friends and I took my son down to Crystal Cove State Beach late this morning, and we did one of our annual death marches on the beach and the trails along the coastal bluffs. Great day – was overcast, so actually quite comfortable. California has done a nice job refurbishing this particular beach (located between Laguna Beach and Balboa Pier just for you folks who are novices to Southern California). Got lots of pix.
Wife and I went to an open mic nite in Yorba Linda to catch another old friend of ours gig, as well as to catch some musicians we might have missed. The old coffee house circuit may not quite be what it once was during the late 1980s-mid 1990s here, but there are still a bunch of very talented folkies out there just waiting to be heard.
That’s actually one of the things that I’ve missed since I moved away back in 1995. No way we could afford to live there now – definitely not on the kind of salaries that educators receive.
Thankfully we still have some relatives who’ve lived out this way since the early 1970s, and get to visit from time to time.
now my only excuse to visit CA too. Although I live in N CA on and off for about 9 years. I learned quite a lot about people in that period of time.
And I got along much better with most of them once I came to the conclusion that they hadn’t all been raised with the same inputs as I had, therefore I ought to cut them some slack, as far as my expectations on behaviour.
Funny about your comment on expectations. I don`t cut anybody any slack if they need to be taught something that may not have been included in the curriculum on social graces. At the same time I`m always open to suggestion myself. But that`s me.
On that note, I wish you all a nice evening & goodnight.
How’s the heat treating you? I bailed out on the boonies location today as I’d about OD on the heat, and predictions were for 90-95 today. It’s really nice to be back in an AC environment, and high speed net too.
It has been pure hell for the past four days, but it is thankfully cooling off now. I saw some of the most astounding temps in these parts last Saturday (115 give or take 5 degrees). We just don’t get temps like that and no one has air conditioning becayse we just don’t get temps like that! :>)
Yeah…Oakland. It was only mid-90’s here, but other parts of the Bay Area saw temperatures top 115. That is like Death Valley temps, almost. Very strange.
I’m used to no green in the summer and I do kind of miss it. Sounds like in a place like ND it could be dangerous conditions for a wild fire.
The Texas panhandle and western Oklahoma have also been beset by grassfires through much of the spring and early summer months. Luckily the OK panhandle has been largely spared – though I consider that more of one of those “by the grace of God” deals. We’ve lucked out for now, and thankfully started getting some rain in late June & early July. That said, the weather has seemed to feel and act more like the sort of monsoonal storminess reserved for NM & AZ.
That’s one of the things I’ve definitely noticed during my California trip – the inland valleys from north to south seem to be ridiculously hot for this time of year. I noticed that on Saturday one of the cities in the San Fernando valley (in Los Angeles County) recorded a temp of 119 – which just blew me away. Then again, even Santa Barbara where we were staying at the time was a toasty low 90s during the afternoon hours.
Thankfully, the marine layer seems to finally be asserting itself a bit, and cooling things back down to something a bit closer to typical for this particular part of the world.
Let’s just say that one of my in-laws who’s been poo-pooing the idea of global warming is starting to change his tune a bit, given the strange weather changes that have been happening the last few years.
I`ve been sort of following Crystal Cove`s transformation from it`s 50`s` style beach shacks to it`s 50`s style beach shacks. I understand the shacks are booked up for a couple of years already. Were you in that part of the park, & how does it look?
Yeah we passed through that part of the park. It’s looking pretty nice, actually. There are still some shacks that haven’t been refurbished, but the ones that have been look good as new. The “Shake Shack” is now owned and operated by ‘Rubys’ (when the state first began to change the beach, I was a bit worried they’d just close it down altogether – but it’s still there under new management, and one can still get a date shake among other goodies), and there will be a ‘Rubys’ restaurant opening early next week as I understand it. Looks also like a lot of the trails and stairways to the beach itself have been refurbished.
It is a lot different than when I first began to frequent that beach in the mid 1980s. In some ways I miss the old days when it was a relatively isolated beach still miles away from urban sprawl. Somehow, even as an urban beach and park it appears as if it has a decent future.
I thought the only place you could get “date shakes” was at Hadleys out in Indio. I hadn`t thought about a date shake since you mentioned them,
& didn`t know there was a place like that at the cove.
If you’ve tasted dates before, imagine a milkshake that is date flavored, and that has bits of date chunks mixed in with the icecream and milk (oh, yeah, with the requisite whipped cream and cherry on top – can’t forget those! 🙂 ).
Personally I’m not much of a date fan (they’re definitely an acquired taste) and I really have to be in the proper frame of mind to eat dates or to drink date shakes, but I have at least one close friend who is convinced that such a shake is the nectar of the gods.
to my biannual vacation spot…the hospital….to get an 8 inch cyst removed that somehow they all missed the last 3 times they had their hands in my abdomen screwing around.
i swear my boobs are next.
thank god my soon to be ex husband who i havent had sex with in over 6 years continues to keep me covered on his health insurance…..i need to find him a girlfriend.

I have no clue what this is, but I’m guessing some sort of moth.

One thing about CA; it sure has diversity in entertainment venues.

Yeah, I’m with you on that one!
Thanks for the entertaining photos this evening.
Hi NDD and Knuckle…just dropping in before I hit the hay myself.
Nice pics, as usual! :>)

I’m thinking Oakland area, right?
The highs here in ND we’ve had before, the it’s getting to be quite a long string of high temp days.
I’ve never seen the country lawn so white. The only plants still growing are thistles, and other “weeds”/native wild plants.

there’s been lots of grass fires
but we only really have one forest in the NE corner of the state, so no forest fires.

I might have to try that sometime!
