It is not the brains that matter most, but that which guides them – the character, the heart, generous qualities, progressive ideas.

Even Scaife is beyond denying the mess that is Irag and W’s mental instability: E&P
The Pittsburgh newspaper owned by conservative billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife yesterday called the Bush administration’s plans to stay the course in Iraq a “prescription for American suicide.”
The editorial in the Tribune-Review added, “And quite frankly, during last Thursday’s news conference, when George Bush started blathering about ‘sometimes the decisions you make and the consequences don’t enable you to be loved,’ we had to question his mental stability.”
On the Internet nobody knows you’re a dog — or the chief executive of a Fortune 500 company.
John Mackey, chief executive of Whole Foods Market, used a fake online identity.
Or so thought John Mackey, the chief executive of Whole Foods Market, who used a fictional identity on the Yahoo message boards for nearly eight years to assail competition and promote his supermarket chain’s stock, according to documents released last week by the Federal Trade Commission.
Mr. Mackey used the online handle “Rahodeb” (an anagram of his wife’s name, Deborah). In one Internet posting sure to enter the annals of chief-executive vanity, Mr. Mackey wrote as Rahodeb, “I like Mackey’s haircut. I think he looks cute!”
With all a chief executive has to do, the 14-hour days spent barking orders, digesting reports, motivating employees and courting Wall Street, why would they spend their time sparring with anonymous critics online? And what makes them think they won’t be revealed?
Certainly ego is involved. Chief executives are used to having their own way around the office, where criticism is usually tempered. Successful executives like Mr. Mackey, whose company’s share price has risen fourfold since 2000, are apparently seduced by the Internet’s promise of anonymity and the temptation of joining heated rhetorical battles about the issues closest to their hearts — even when the law requires them to stay on the sidelines.
About a dozen sweaty people pedaled bicycles up the Champs-Élysées on Sunday toward the Arc de Triomphe, as onlookers cheered.
These were not the leading riders of the Tour de France racing toward the finish line, but American tourists testing this city’s new communal bike program.
“I’m never taking the subway again,” said a beaming Justin Hill, 47, a real estate broker from Santa Barbara, Calif.
More than 10,600 of the hefty gray bicycles became available for modest rental prices on Sunday at 750 self-service docking stations that provide access in eight languages. The number is to grow to 20,600 by the end of the year.
Sounds kind of fun.

2008 Nomination Contests Holding Steady With Clinton and Giuliani on Top
No further decline in McCain’s support despite rough patch on campaign trail

PRINCETON, NJ — A new Gallup survey, conducted July 12-15, 2007, finds little change from earlier this month in public preferences for the Republican and Democratic presidential nominations.
Sen. Hillary Clinton continues to lead Sen. Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination. Clinton has a 34% to 25% lead over Obama in a straight ballot question listing eight announced candidates plus Gore, and a 54% vs. 42% lead in a measure asking Democrats who they would vote for if the race narrows down to just Clinton and Obama. In the Republican race, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani continues to overshadow his opponents, leading former Sen. Fred Thompson by 10 percentage points in the straight ballot question, 30% to 20%, and by a sizable 20-point margin in a “narrow down” with Fred Thompson

AP:
“The former New York mayor is running virtually even with Thompson, who has become a threat without even officially entering the race. The actor and former Tennessee senator has essentially stayed steady at 19 percent.”
And from Andrew Sullivan, for ‘conservatives’ there’s the Obama Option
“If Clinton is the nominee, of course, a lot changes. A lot of people will be forced to return to the GOP and struggle against most odds from within. So Obama is very much on the table. He has to be, by default. I’m reading; I’ve been observing; I’m researching more. That’s all. Could any Democrat have spent and borrowed more than Bush? Could any Democrat have damaged national security more than Bush and Cheney? This guy gets my drift.”
The latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that nearly a quarter of Republicans are unwilling to back top-tier hopefuls Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, John McCain or Mitt Romney, and no one candidate has emerged as the clear front-runner among Christian evangelicals. Such dissatisfaction underscores the volatility of the 2008 Republican nomination fight.
In sharp contrast, the Democratic race remains static, with Hillary Rodham Clinton holding a sizable lead over Barack Obama. The New York senator, who is white, also outpaces her Illinois counterpart, who is black, among black and Hispanic Democrats, according to a combined sample of two months of polls.

The only other sign that Democrats are at all agitated about their choices is the continued support for Al Gore, the former vice president and 2000 Democratic presidential nominee who says he is not running. His popularity has slid some to 15 percent.
Otherwise, Clinton kept her strong advantage over Obama; her backers accounted for 36 percent of Democrats to his 20 percent, while support for Edwards remained essentially unchanged at 11 percent.
