ask on July 19, 2007 at 7:38 am

    Good morning/afternoon/evening all!
    Vacation is over, but it looks like no need to go to work today;

As of 11 p.m., the area between 40th Street and 43th Street and between Third and Vanderbilt Avenues remained closed off. New York City Office of Emergency Management is asking everyone to stay away from the so-called “Frozen Zone,” and residents who live within the zone are being asked to remain in their buildings as officials test for possible asbestos in the air.

    (From NY1’s site)

    My office is right there.

    • Second Nature
Second Nature on July 19, 2007 at 7:40 am

      Great minds think alike! 🙂

I can’t imagine how frightening it is every time there is an explosion in NYC.  But an extra day off is not such a bad result…

      • ask
ask on July 19, 2007 at 7:44 am

Well, due to the jet lag, I was up early and kind of eager to get in to see what’s cooking after 3.5 weeks away.
It’s no big sacrifice, though, to shift gears back to what it has been lately…

        • Second Nature
Second Nature on July 19, 2007 at 7:51 am

It’s best to ease back into real life.  Family Man would tell you to just round it up to 4 weeks off and then take another couple of naps before heading back to work next Monday.

          • ask
ask on July 19, 2007 at 7:58 am

Second Nature on July 19, 2007 at 8:05 am

It’s a full time job just trying to stay cool. Today’s projected high is 98!  My youngest son is leaving next week for a 22 day backpacking trip to Montana and we’re trying to get all the supplies he needs which is sort of a pain in the neck, but a happy one.  I’m hoping this will be a life-changing trip for him.

But your son is in for quite an adventure.  Twenty-two days; they have food/supply depots along their trek?

Nope, they bring all of their supplies with them and eat lightly.  Of course, Ben is a big fan of Man vs. Wild on the Disc. Channel, so he thinks he’s going to spear a wild salmon, break its spine with a quick snap and then eat it raw.  He draws the line at eating maggots, though.

Family Man on July 19, 2007 at 8:50 am

          • Family Man
Family Man on July 19, 2007 at 8:57 am

Nope.  Today it looks like a water leak in the front yard, so I’ll be outside digging down to that and trying to repair it.  I’m sure after working all day on it, I’ll come to the conclusion that it’s beyond me how to repair it, and then I’ll call someone in.  As lazy as I am, you do think I would skip the first part though. 🙂

We had a “trail lunch” during the parent weekend at the end of CBtE’s trip…Lots of trail mix-y stuff and peanut butter and jelly and crckers.  Somebody made cookies and put them in the re-supply soemwhere in the middle of the trip, and the boys were still talking about that (and a carrot cake clif bar they all split) at the end.

Hey CG – yep, he’s doing Outward Bound. I have no doubt he can handle the physical aspects – I’m just worried about him changing planes and having to get to and from the hotel he has to stay in alone the night prior to departing from Butte.  He’s a little scatterbrained….ADD.

CabinGirl on July 19, 2007 at 8:53 am

I remember worrying about the same thing – had butterflies in the stomach just thinking about it beforehand.  Even with the ADD, I’m sure he’ll do fine, and it will be a great experience for him.  I made CBtE call me between planes, though.

Be ready to be shocked by how physically fit he is when he gets back, though.  ðŸ™‚
