Still many leaves here too, but the wind should take care of them before too long. The sky is gorgeous; enormous dark clouds hanging around the lakeshore, lit from underneath by the sun. I was driving around yesterday through a sudden windy storm of that snow that looks like little styrofoam pellets. It was cool, but I’ve about had my fill already.
I get to take my mom on tours of nursing homes today. The fun never ends.
Good morning, Andi!
I was about to say that I have a lazy one ahead, but then recalled that in a moment of insanity earlier this week, I signed up for some classes to get in better shape. The first one this morning at 10.
Hi Andi,
have you ever had problems with hunters coming too close to your house or on your property without permission? The last place I rented in Maryland was 8 acres of hillside forest on Catoctin Mountain (such as Maryland mountains are) that was surrounded by near empty forest for hundreds and hundreds of yards in all directions. Prime hunting ground. In exploring the woods around the house not long after getting there I discovered two deer hunting tree stands within 100 or so yards of the house, which freaked me out a little since the kids were young and I’d let them have a pretty free roam of the place. The landlord had no idea they were hunting on his land. I ended up tearing them down with his permission and periodically checked around in the woods to make sure no more were erected. It was just a safety issue for me since I really have nothing against deer hunting, so long as it’s not just for trophies.
Hi supersoling. Our last home was next to a large state forest where hunting is allowed. We found a couple of reliable local hunters and invited them to use our place if they would park in a spot visible to other potential hunters, so they would know someone was already there. That seemed to take care of our problem with trespassers and unknown shooters. We avoid the woods in hunting season, having heard talk over the years of “noise shots” and finding a lot of empty hooch bottles under deer stands. The only thing I care to hunt is mushrooms;-)
We did take a hike to the top of the mountain directly behind the house and found a carry bag full of ammo, deer scent and a couple of spotlights, though this wasn’t on the rented property. Don’t know if it was federal, state, or local land. I do know that Camp David was within two miles of us and I was warned a couple of times not to poke around too much in the woods in case i might stumble upon some M16 wielding Marines! But regarding the bag, spotlighting deer is illegal, so someone was poaching up there behind us. Not really my concern either. I was just worried about stray shots flying around my house and my kids. Otherwise, it was a beautiful and interesting place to live. The mountains there are very pourous on the surface due to a layer of small to medium boulders and rocks that lie above and just below the surface. So that, after a heavy rain you could walk through the forest and hear water flowing under your feet. It was cool :o) when I first figured out what it was. On the other hand, if the basement sump pump ever failed, and it did!, you might find two feet of water at the bottom of the stairs! Not a good thing :o)
The main kind of mushrooms people find around here are morels. Hmm, makes me salivate just thinking about them. Sadly, we hardly ever find any on our place.
We had some problems with hunters in the early years but now we’ve been here for so long people know we don’t allow hunting.
Hello to all,
I was curious to hear if anyone might know how refinish69 is doing? I don’t check this thread very often at all, but it crossed my mind this morning that I hadn’t seen anything from him in a while. Just hoping he’s well.
The last time he stopped by was in September and he was getting ready to start a new job so I’m hoping that the combination of that and getting set up in a new place has been keeping him busy.
I ‘ll take that as a ‘he has a good shot at pulling off a recovery from a lousy situation’ reply.
Thanks Andi.
My mind wanders alot when it comes to people I’m familiar with that for one reason or another have made enough of an impression on me to get a little deeper into my thoughts about how they’re doing.
Refinish is one of those people and when the feebleness takes a break every once in a while it occurs to me to ask….you know, because for one reason or another I care a little more about him, her, or whoever has broken through the fog of my mind and left an impression :o)
refinish69 appears to be alive and well at his blog, Doing My Part For The Left, where he last posted Nov. 13. IIRC he had some major changes to deal with earlier this year and may still be finding his way home.
Good morning Andi. I don’t sleep the way I did before becoming a parent, and getting older. But it’s still nice to be able to stay in bed a while longer.
New exercise routines care an adjustment, aren’t they? I’m sure you’ll be feeling it less and less as you get used to it though.
We’re enjoying the empty house…the boys are at their dad’s till this afternoon. I’m working on a work project for a little while this morning, and planning on doing some grocery shopping, knitting (I’m on the second sock!), and soup-making this afternoon. It’s gray and drizzly here, so I’m not sure if I’ll get my walk/run in or not, but I’m hoping too.
Andi, the exercise masochist. My yoga class reminds me of muscles I didn’t know I had…and then I have to hold that pose for 90 seconds while said muscle is shaking and threatening collapse. I’ll be damned if I’m going to show weakness in front of my 70 year old classmates!
I could never do something like yoga or karate — that stuff requires discipline. And besides, I only like the pain if I acquire it in an extremely pleasurable place — like woods or mountains. (Note my morning kindness of giving you a wide open line to snark on.)
I got to sleep in till 7:30, but I have some work to do (why do these emergency projects always pop up the week of Thanksgiving?), so I didn’t want to be lazy any more. I’m hoping to finish up early today so I can have some fun this afternoon with the boys.
There are no “Palestinian” people. They are arabs from other nations who just happened to live in the area designated Palestine by the romans after they destroyed the jews. Grow up and be a man…idiot
Actually, the folks at the office are very nice about letting remote people know when everybody is taking off early so we can “shutdown” early if we want.
Leaving early on Wednesday- I wish. The biggest hematology meeting of the year happens the first week of December every year, and never fails to maje me insanely busy during Thanksgiving week. I think last year was the only year I can remember not having to work at some point during the long weekend.
Hope you all are with those you love or love those you’re with. Have and enjoy good food, good times, lots of laughter and a few minutes to feel your gratitude for it all.
I will start my gratefulness with all of you here who I have had the greatest of joy and pleasure to interact with for these years of knowing you. Each of you have added something wonderful and unique to my life. THANKS!
I’ll admit I haven’t been around for ages, but is this the most recent cafe? …begun on the 16th? At least there are several comments as of today so someone is there or was.
What have I missed out on? Are there no more daily cafe’s? Maybe I just missed them and/or I am blind. Help!
It was decided awhile back to just have one cafe in the boxes up top. They’re not written as diaries anymore unless one of the previous hosts wants to put up a special cafe. CG is handling the cafe now, and doing a mighty good job of it, if I may add.
The participation has gone very far down, and now it’s usually the early risers that will greet each other in the mornings. So a cafe can last as long as it takes to get up to about 100 comments.
Oh dear….sorry to hear this. I hope everything is okay with Dianne.
Hello Dianne, wherever you are. Sorry I was gone for so long, not that my e-presence would have made any difference in your decision. Just hope you’re okay.
Hope everyone has been doing well. We’re supposed to have a rainy day here, and a cold front coming in starting tonight. There will be a 20 degree difference between today and tomorrow. I’m happy for it.
I’m more than set since it won’t be here. We’re all meeting at my youngest brother’s house this year. I’ve got a few rels that will be staying here, but it won’t be a big influx this time.
It’s about 1 1/2 hour drive to my brother’s house. That’s one thing I wish we had down here is a more accessible train system. I would much prefer riding the train there than the driving.
The snow has come and gone, it will actually be in the 60s tomorrow. We’ll be driving about 50 or so miles to my parents on Long Isand. Then we’ll be driving again on Saturday to go to madame boran’s family. Friday, in between, I actually get to slack for 5 minutes. How about you?
It’s too early for me to handle multiple conversations with you — we’ll have to combine them if you don’t want me to suffer brain overload … guess I’m not that much of a workaholic. ;P
Hah a brain overload with Andi? No such thing could happen. 😛
One thing I’m happy about is yesterday morning both my neighbors had their yards done and they looked great. My yard has leaves ever where. A good wind came along yesterday afternoon and now you can’t even tell they had their done. So now my lawn won’t feel so all alone being so leafy. 🙂
And you can use this to explain to them why messing with leaves is pointless. Besides, my f-i-l (who grew up on a farm) always said leaving leaf litter on your yard was good winter protection and cheap mulch.
Andi that’s the direct opposite of what I want. The rels think of this place as a hotel and me as a servant. I want them to get up and rampage. Maybe then, they’ll do some stuff around here. 🙂
Morning, ask. The thought of you taking karate lessons reminds me of my gym, where during the day most of the clients are in the geriatric range….and I love to peek in the door while they are doing tai chi; that slow-motion thing that always reminds me of David Carradine in Kung Fu (couldn’t they find a real Asian actor for that?)…anyway, it’s nice to see elderly folks that are still flexible and trying to stay that way.
Not that you are old…reading it over it sounds like that’s what brought it to mind, but really not. 🙂
I’m sure we will soon be heading out turkey hunting and spending the rest of the day plucking. Actually, I’m spending my day with Mrs. Smith, Sara Lee and Butterball.
I’ll be driving up and down the highway to see if there’s any fresh roadkill. Don’t want it too fresh, but too old and it has a hydrocarbon taste from all the tire marks on it. ;P
G’morning All. Thanks for the replies to my questions last night. Is anyone still here?
I’m sorry Village Blue is closed. FM, would you email me when you feel up to it?
I hope this comment doesn’t get lost in the change over to a new cafe. Sorry to hear that the readership has dropped off. It’s handy to have the cafe button up at the top though.
Yes, Andi, I’ll be coming around again. So, some of you east coasters have to wait around for me. Okay?
Hi puget,
Good to see you stop by again. This time of day is usually quiet around here. As you can see above, it can be quite busy in the early morning, but it appears to be mostly eastern time zone participants and dwindles down around 8 or 9. Maybe if you and others on the west coast (hello diane) come by more regularly it could become an all-day affair again.
Sure thing.
I’m heading out to do some shopping at the Union Square green market. Then uptown to curly’s. A great Thanksgiving Day to you and Gooserock!
See you soon.
Old cafe here.
The sun is shining for the first time all week. Hallelujah.
Good morning, CG!
Clear and cool day here.
Greetings from a frigid, snowy, blowy, sleety Cleveland. If I needed a reminder about why I moved south, this is it.
Morning all!
It’s snowy there? We haven’t even lost all of our leaves yet…
Good cold morning all. The rain has stopped here, now it is bright and cold. Back at work, ugh.
Hope everybody has an enjoyable one ahead.
Good morning, Andi!
I was about to say that I have a lazy one ahead, but then recalled that in a moment of insanity earlier this week, I signed up for some classes to get in better shape. The first one this morning at 10.
I’m sure doing that is a good thing but I hate scheduled, organized exercise. Probably a side effect of my fondness for anarchism. 😉
I know what you’re saying, but it’s only the ‘no choice’ situation that will get me going.
Yeah, that does make it easier and, in fact, the dogs pretty much give me no choice about going for a walk.
Are you going to a gym or doing something like tai chi?
I guess the dogs are pretty much on schedule – but a morning walk in the forest doesn’t require much motivation.
I’ll be taking karate lessons.
Not when the weather’s nice but the dogs don’t care what it’s doing outside.
Learning something like karate makes the exercise a lot more interesting. One of my nieces has been doing karate for years and loves it.
Inspired by young asklet who’s been doing it since he was 6 (he turned 13 last week).
Well I’m being inspired (or more accurately pestered) to go for a walk. Hope you have a good time at class.
Ta.
Good morning Andi and ask! I see the TC Steele “mists of indigo” are back in the forest. Nice photo. Good luck with your lessons, ask.
Well they were last week; this week, it’s hunters that are back in the forest.

How are you and where have you been?
Just missing you and wanting to say Hi.
Big hugs and a happy Turkey Day

Oh AndiF! This is soooo beautiful. Makes me homesick for the Ohio hills.
Hello to all,

I think that’s very nice….making little connections through the tubes. 🙂
I think it’s nice too :o)Something about that guy got into my thought stream :o)
I’m glad to hear that he has a new piece of ground to set his bones upon and that he’s goona dazze someone new with his capabilities.
Fresh starts can be a mutha, or a blesing, or both.
Either way you gotta get that critter by the horns and commense to shakin :o)
goona dazze being some Hollywood invented dance from the internationally recognized sequal to the Star Wars movies, Revenge of the Crones :o)
Good evening all. Things were busy here today. And cold. Tomorrow we’re off to Lawn Guyland for my nephew’s birthday party.
… as far as my sleeping mind is concerned they’re just like any other day.
Hope everybody else’s thinks differently.
Good morning Andi. I don’t sleep the way I did before becoming a parent, and getting older. But it’s still nice to be able to stay in bed a while longer.
Good morning, Andi and boran!
My affliction is usually as Andi’s, but slept through this morning – yay.
Must be the karate. 🙂
Morning, CG!
It hurts most places too.
What are you guys up to today?
New exercise routines care an adjustment, aren’t they? I’m sure you’ll be feeling it less and less as you get used to it though.
We’re enjoying the empty house…the boys are at their dad’s till this afternoon. I’m working on a work project for a little while this morning, and planning on doing some grocery shopping, knitting (I’m on the second sock!), and soup-making this afternoon. What are you up to?
Right now, we’re just lazy at home – meeting swimmer for lunch a bit later. Then up to curly’s, who’ll be back from family visit in Baltimore.
Nearly gone.
Good morning, Andi!
We still have many trees with green foilage in the park, but finally, it is going fast.
Morning ask. All recovered from your karate class?
I guess the amount of green is part of the canyon effect of tall buildings holding the heat in.
Oh, no!
There are muscles that I had totally forgotten the existence of…
Still making their recurrence very noticeable.
That’s actually a feeling I like — muscles that ache from exertion. It makes me want to go out and hurt so good so more.
Oh, I wouldn’t touch that with a 10 inch pole.
Good things — my masochism definitely doesn’t work like that.
Agree. Next class tomorrow, which will probably hurt even more, but it should be OK in a week, or two.
We have a coating of snow on everything this morning…and it was pouring when I went to bed last night, so it was a surprise! 🙂
Did you get to sleep in since the CBs aren’t in school?
No snow here — in fact, we’re in for a slight warming trend through Wednesday and then we have a chance of snow on T’day.
I got to sleep in till 7:30, but I have some work to do (why do these emergency projects always pop up the week of Thanksgiving?), so I didn’t want to be lazy any more. I’m hoping to finish up early today so I can have some fun this afternoon with the boys.
Sleet coming down here as well, but it melts the second it hits the ground.
Good morning all. It’s snowing here. Ugh.
send it this way, will ya? We’re looking at 88 degrees today. Sigh…
(waves hello to all!)
Sounds good to me.
Hate mail:
Anyone miss the old frog?
yes, and I lobbied for retro-Darwin to return on the site’s birthday 🙂
I actually like this one better — it’s slightly messy, impressionistic look is more appealing to me than the current version.
for the week, does that make today hump day?
Good morning, Andi!
Sure does, and maybe you can leave early tomorrow.
is kinda hard when you work at home. 😉
OK then; maybe you can take mental leave early…
Actually, the folks at the office are very nice about letting remote people know when everybody is taking off early so we can “shutdown” early if we want.
Well, you don’t need to tell them when you actually take off tomorrow 😉
Gray, miserable morning, looks like rain is imminent – but I need to take a walk. See you later.
It looks the same here too, but tomorrow is forecast as a beautiful 65+ degree day. Go figure.
Good morning ask, Andi and CG. Maybe I shouldn’t pack up the barbecue.
Hi andi and ask!
Leaving early on Wednesday- I wish. The biggest hematology meeting of the year happens the first week of December every year, and never fails to maje me insanely busy during Thanksgiving week. I think last year was the only year I can remember not having to work at some point during the long weekend.
Happy Holiday week everyone!
THANKS!
Blessings and love with Big Hugs,
Shirl
Whereya been, Shirl? And, ditto. 🙂
Howdy All….if anyone is out there to see this…
I’ll admit I haven’t been around for ages, but is this the most recent cafe? …begun on the 16th? At least there are several comments as of today so someone is there or was.

Hi Puget.

Things do change don’t they. 🙂
Hey P4. Hope this means you’ll come by and visit more often (though next time I hope it’s during my waking hours).
Hi Andi. I guess I’ll have to start my cafe hopping earlier. I’ll do my best to remember. It’s nice to be back.
Okay…here’s another question. Boy! It doesn’t pay to be away for a while.
I just tried my quick link to Village Blue and it doesn’t work anymore. What is the correct URL?
Thanks
Hi Puget.
Sorry to be the one to tell you, but Dianne closed down Village Blue a few weeks back.
Good morning, FM!
Are you all set for the big day? Family invasion expected?
I’m more than set since it won’t be here. We’re all meeting at my youngest brother’s house this year. I’ve got a few rels that will be staying here, but it won’t be a big influx this time.
Do ya’ll have any special plans?
That must be a relief.
We’ll be heading to curly’s brother/s-i-l in Westchester, so it’s just half an hour away by train.
It’s about 1 1/2 hour drive to my brother’s house. That’s one thing I wish we had down here is a more accessible train system. I would much prefer riding the train there than the driving.
A big huzzah for the short week.
I’m really thankful to see you back. How are you and FMom feeling?
We’re feeling better, but still not up to 100%. A stomach virus will take a lot out of you, pun intended. 🙂
Hope you’ve been doing well. How’s your woods? All the leaves gone yet?
Glad to hear you’re both doing better, I figured something was up when you went missing for days.
A stomach virus will take a lot out of you
There is an excellent opportunity for replenishment coming up 😉
Yep usually when I go missing it’s a migraine or something else. Even when feeling bad, I can’t say I don’t stop by. I just don’t comment.
I’m glad you’re both doing better. We’re fine here — looking forward to the short week and the family get-together.
The leaves are almost gone — just some left on the beeches and oaks. The young beeches will hold on to their dead leaves through the winter.
The family get-together is the biggest thing for me on the holidays. But it is followed a very close second by all the food. 🙂
We’re finally getting some good color down here, but the leave are falling all the time too.
Glad to see you back, FM!
Hiya Boran and thanks.
So are ya’ll planning a big day tomorrow, and do you still have snow?
The snow has come and gone, it will actually be in the 60s tomorrow. We’ll be driving about 50 or so miles to my parents on Long Isand. Then we’ll be driving again on Saturday to go to madame boran’s family. Friday, in between, I actually get to slack for 5 minutes. How about you?
Good morning, Andi!
Hope alternate hump day went well. When will you shut down today?
Probably around 3. Will you be putting in a full day?
Untill 3! Geeze Andi you’re a workaholic. 🙂
Nope, I’m having a slacking day.
Second class was last night and it hurts so good all over…
Good on you for both the slackerly day and the unslackerly night. 🙂
I was going to say, karate does sound very unslackerly. 😉
how useful it would be against rampaging relatives.
Andi that’s the direct opposite of what I want. The rels think of this place as a hotel and me as a servant. I want them to get up and rampage. Maybe then, they’ll do some stuff around here. 🙂
Well, then, you could use it to intimate them into rampaging. But that would be terribly unslackerly, I guess.
Well I guess which ever way I go, it’s going to be unslackerly.
I haven’t had a chance to ask, but did you have a good time in St. Louis with Mary?
I had a very fine time. We went out to a really good restaurant, had good food and great talk.
a really good restaurant, had good food and great talk.
You two are too wild. I don’t know if I could have kept up with ya’ll.
That’s exactly what she’s saying ask. Are you gonna take that! 🙂
Haha,
I feel geriatric right now, but otherwise young at heart.
I’m sure we will soon be heading out turkey hunting and spending the rest of the day plucking. Actually, I’m spending my day with Mrs. Smith, Sara Lee and Butterball.
I’ll be driving up and down the highway to see if there’s any fresh roadkill. Don’t want it too fresh, but too old and it has a hydrocarbon taste from all the tire marks on it. ;P
Gotta go. Rels are up and George wants to go out.
Everyone have a good day in the pond.
G’morning All. Thanks for the replies to my questions last night. Is anyone still here?
I’m sorry Village Blue is closed. FM, would you email me when you feel up to it?
