Watching the Leon Panetta confirmation hearing, it is obvious that Republicans are still in the thrall of the FOX show, 24, and think Jack Bauer should be cloned until our entire intelligence community is made up of superheros who specialize in torture.

And I do love Jack Bauer and 24, but seriously, people need a reality check. I’m hoping this season they emphasize how torture doesn’t always give you what you need, and how it puts you at risk. It started promisingly enough, with Jack having to defend himself to Congress re his past torture activities, but I don’t think they’re going to backtrack on this, darn it. The creators are pretty hardcore rightwingers, save one.
