Because Georgie was sure a “war president” would be re-elected?
Because Cheney saw a chance to Halliburton, KBR his way to an even bigger fortune?
Because the war profiteers saw a chance to make a buck?
To appear to be “tough”? (Compensating for cowardice in failing to serve in Viet Nam and maybe compensating for some body part that they viewed as having shortcomings?
Because they got their sadistic rocks off watching torture tapes?
Because they saw a chance to rip off our civil liberties by constantly trying to scare us?
Because their hearts are little shriveled walnut-size repositories of hate?
Because they are without morals, ethics or humanity?
Because …. just because they wanted to, and they could.
You’re probably closer to the truth than most people would think. The influence of Dubya’s daddy issues on the present state of the world is quite likely vast. Of course, he wasn’t trying to avenge his father; he was trying to outdo him.
I can only imagine what Bush family holiday gatherings must be like. The elder Bush slices a bunch of turkey, stops, and strokes his chin. “Hmm, on the one hand, I’ve stopped short of slicing the whole turkey, but on the other hand, the dining table is still in one piece. How ’bout that?”
The primary goals in invading Iraq were to establish a permanent military presence there, and to set the country up as the center of U.S. military, political, and economic operations for the region. Obama will not abandon the imperial citadel (risibly called an embassy) in Baghdad, nor will they ever make a complete military withdrawal. Those permanent military bases will continue to operate indefinitely.
It’s worth pointing out that the neocon plan to make Iraq the focus of American power in the region wasn’t just for the heck of it. It was because they feared — and quite reasonably so — that the eventual fall of the current Saudi regime would deprive the US of the use of Saudi Arabia as the focus of American power.
The irony, of course, is that given the same investment in developing alternative energy sources, the middle east would have ceased to be an American concern altogether. Unfortunately, the 2000 coup d’etat by the American oil industry precluded any possibility of common sense and sanity carrying the day.

It’s all profit.
When the country goes to war the taxpayers pay for it. When the oil is pumped the oil companies get the money. And if they can scam it, they raise the prices too.
Although I avoid quoting Chomsky he was right when he said it’s the hand on the spigot.
It’s like having too many mob families with sons around
There is money to be made in the oil enterprise
I always wanted to land a fighter jet on a carrier with publicity
The Saudis kicked us out, so I needed bases elsewhere
I’m kinda evangelical new born, see it as penitance
Great to have it listed on my cv when I meet Peter at the gate
Truth is: I was clueless and Dick told me to go

Yep.
DITTO
ps: and because they are just plain hard asses and shit heads and crappy men of no courage what so ever!!!!
Because it was there?
well, Sierra Leone was there, too, and we didn’t invade it.
Sierra Leone is already the lowest-ranked country on the Human Development Index. There’s nothing left there for the neocons to screw up.
Because Saddam wanted to kill GHW Bush? Or because he nationalized their oil industry.?

To spread freedom. < wicked cackling >

Oh, we got </wicked cackling>. We’re just waiting for </war>.

Yeah. And the oil.
Yes, oil was also a factor, but not the oil itself, rather control over Iraq’s oil. Profit for oil companies is a side benefit.
Afghanistan is all about that pipeline that they’ve been trying to set up since the Soviet Union lost direct control of the oilfields in Central Asia.
Oil profits go to the oil companies. The expenses, the cost of the wars, the dead soldiers, hey, that’s the taxpayers’ problem.
Of course it’s the money. It’s always the money.
We will have to agree to disagree on this point, I guess.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
Neo-con delusion mixed in with plain old GREED.
OIL, Booman.
Straight up. No chaser.
Follow the money and you’ll realize why we invaded Iraq.
Peak oil.
