I’ve been spreading the rumor that Joe Biden was born in Rhodesia…not a citizen. We’ll see if it catches on. I’m a reliable source.

I must admit I spent the day with my father, the Rush fan, who won’t argue much with me but incidted me to talk and think about the Cambridge follies…

And I think there’s a big hole in the entire story. Crowley has a city-wide reputation as an expert in how to avoid racial profiling. He thinks he’s following procedure, and then suddenly finds himself in the living room of a guy with 50 honorary degrees, and he’s too intelligent not to realize that he’s just destroyed his reputation and his career…It’s a classic “Oh, shit” moment.

So he “lures” Gates back out on the porch, and with the skill of a real expert, tries to justify what he’s already done. Otherwise he’s given up his reputation and position.

I do believe both people “lost it” in that situation, but I also think that there’s a dimension of face-saving that is being missed here.
