Here’s a story being floated in the New York Times. You can choose to believe it or not.
Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s son Seif el-Islam is proposing a resolution to the Libyan conflict that would entail his father relinquishing power for a transition to constitutional democracy under his son’s direction, a diplomat with close ties to the Libyan government said Sunday, citing “eminent people” in Tripoli.
Whether this is a real story that shows real weakness, or it is part of our information warfare program, I really cannot say.
Yesterday I was wondering if Gadaffi was going to leave Libya. He’s lost no matter what. I haven’t read that he’s out there talking to the media. He seems to have been quiet. His sons aren’t exactly democratic.
We could see something along these lines this week.
AJE outlined this scenario when the report of Saif al-Islam’s aide’s trip to the UK came out. There are a lot of people who have talked about this scenario hypothetically because of Saif al-Islam’s contacts in the West, but it has been a non-starter with the protesters and now the Interim National Council for the same reason that Gamal Mubarak was not acceptable to the Egyptian protesters. It doesn’t end the regime, and the objective is a clear end to the regime.
The important news today the fact that Turkey sent a ship into Misurata to evacuate a couple hundred of wounded. It also gave the first opportunity in weeks for independent journalists to get a sense of what is happening in Misurata. For example, it was known that there were around 160 dead from the previous three days, with no clarity of who were combatants and who were civilians.
I agree that you can’t trust the news about Libya. The Mighty Wurlitzer is working overtime.
And in this situation, there are a whole lot of Conn organs playing as well. Not to mention all the pennywhistles on Twitter and Facebook. The Great Republican Wurlitzer is drowned out on this one–except in the US.
Even Gaddafi, Chavez, and Ortega have formed a string trio to play the old “socialist” strings.
The first casualty of war…
Yeah. Like his sons even know what that is. It’s like they’re trying to rob their old man of his fortune and just continue his legacy of dictatorship under “New Management” – Theirs.
“Whether this is a real story that shows real weakness…“
Oh, yeah. Like the son, “Sword of Islam”, is the democratic alternative. Like this isn’t a scam by the father and the son. Riiiiiight!
I thought you were pro-Gaddafi, Hurria
That`s not very nice.
Why? I’m basing it on her recent posts about Libya. They seem very anti-rebel.
I`m basing it on the comment of her`s you responded to.
It was obviously an anti Kadafie (sp?) one, don`t you think?
Yes, I do. That’s why I was surprised.
It’s always interesting the conclusions people manage to torture out of what one says when they really want to.
First, I don’t recall saying anything that could reasonably be interpreted as “anti-rebel”.
Second, this is not a zero-sum thing, and even if I were anti-rebel, that hardly makes me pro-Qadhdhafi.
Third, I have lost count of the number of times I have been accused of being pro-Saddam because I actively opposed the 2001 attack on Iraq, the sanctions, and the aggression of 2003.
Fourth, refusing to buy into the fairy tales of unmitigated pure evil regarding Qadhdhafi, Saddam, or anyone else, and recognizing that they have in fact done a positive thing or two, makes me a reasonable, rational person, not pro-the-bad-guy.
It’s also not even remotely accurate and there is no basis for it in anything I have written.
Thanks KH!
Hurria,
I hadn`t thought so.
You`re welcome.
What is it that these dictator’s don’t get? Get the f*ck out! It doesn’t mean leave your cabinet and family in charge, it means take all your sh*t and your people and get the f*ck out!
I’m guessing part of those negotiations is about how much of the swag stored away in Switzerland and elsewhere the Kadafy (LA Times spelling) Family will have once they get out.
