There is no racial wedge that Newt Gingrich will leave untapped. He appears to not care that Robert DeNiro’s joke was aimed squarely at his brand of cynical racial politics. Was the country ready for a black first lady? The voters said overwhelmingly, “yes.” But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some people who weren’t. And aren’t. Newt appeals to them.
