I’m trying not to get too upset, but it’s not working. First, we have what really happened:
It’s been more than a few hours since your teenage son went out to buy some snacks during a break in a televised NBA All-Star game that you, he and his little brother were watching. But it’s no real big deal because you know he’s a good kid. No arrests. No gang stuff. No delinquency. No drugs. In fact, he’s an A/B, 11th-grade student athlete with aspirations of becoming an aviation mechanic. So you know you really don’t need to worry. Maybe he ran into a cute girl. Maybe one of his buddies called him on the cell phone he was carrying and told him about an NBA party being held by some cool neighborhood youngsters. Although you tell yourself you don’t really need to worry, you begin to worry anyway. A few hours turn into several hours, and the night turns into day. So you call the local police department’s Missing Persons Unit, but they don’t have any info. So then you call 911, and the cops ask you for a description. Shortly after, they show up with a photo of a bloody-mouth kid lying dead on a morgue stretcher. Toe-tagged as John Doe.
He had his cell phone with him, and the police had found it on him. The names and numbers of his family are on that cell phone. But the cops never called you or anyone else in it to ask anything. However, they did ask you if the battered corpse in that photo is your son. All you can do is slump to the floor, devastated by all-consuming shock and despair, and then drag yourself to your phone, call his mother, and, unable to say anything more, simply tell her “(our child) is gone.” Your innocent, unarmed boy. Murdered. With a gaping gunshot blast to the chest. Gone. That can’t be. He just went to 7-Eleven. He just went to buy some Skittles and an iced tea. But it can be, and it is. He was murdered. He is gone. Forever. This is what happened to Trayvon Martin’s family. Imagine instead that it was your son, your grandson, your nephew or your little brother. Now what?
Then we have the comments section at Fox News reacting to the news that the Department of Justice and the FBI are going to look into the case:

I had to stop reading the disgusting comments way before I reached the end. As a species, we haven’t really progressed that far, have we? Funny, I was just asking myself earlier today, what happened to the promise of the Age Of Aquarius from back in our DFH days, anyway?
As the mother of three sons, ages 25, 23, and 19, I am horrified and heartsick about this case. I can’t even imagine what Trayvon’s family is going through.
This is murder. It’s the unjustified, deliberate killing of an unarmed kid, and if this case gets buried somehow, there will be an uproar from people all across the country, me included.
Condolences don’t even begin to ease the worst pain of his family, but I extend them anyway.
As for Zimmerman, well, he can spend the rest of his freakish existence in prison.
These types of people have always been with us; and will be forever. It is just that now, the anonymity of the internet gives them an opportunity to easily gather in specific places en masse and present their vile and disgusting views in a very public forum.
A place like the FoxNews website is simply a gathering place for them to vent their deep seated inhumanity. I think it is safe to say that the vast majority of people who typed that filth would not dare to express these views in public. I guess an optimist would count that as progress, but that is certainly not a consolation to most of us.
These views are just further evidence that we will probably never be rid of that tribal instinct to dehumanize those who look or act differently than what is considered “normal” in their circles of acquaintance. Evidence, once again, that we are still only a slightly more evolved form of primate than what is roaming the jungles of Uganda.
Never forget, this is the demographic that believes “The only good ___ is a dead __.” And Fox deliberately feeds them their RDA of red meat.
Yes, I find the fact that Fox gives these people a forum more reprehensible than the commenters themselves. If not for places like Fox, these people would still feel isolated and alone, which they should. But Fox gives them an unearned and undeserved sense of power and respectability. And that is simply an abomination.

The part that galls me the most is that I’m convinced the COWARD Zimmerman would never have gotten out of his car if in fact he had seen a harden criminal (or someone who looked the part).
He approached that kid because he was just that – a skinny kid – alone and defenseless against the 9mm punk shithead Zimmerman knew he was packing.
This story goes beyond heartbreaking to making me almost physically nauseous. I can’t believe how many of us there are in whom racism and stupidity are battling for control of a barely functioning brain stem.
