You know that Rick Perry who portrayed himself as a rugged individualist, flirted with secession and generally suggested the federal government wasn’t worth a bucket of warm spit and ought to be knee-capped? Yeah well, that was then. This is now:
Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) on Thursday declared a disaster area and said he planned to request federal funds in response to an explosion at a fertilizer plant in Waco that may have killed as many as 15 people.
At a press conference, the governor thanked President Barack Obama for calling for offer quick action after Wednesday night’s explosion.
“Last night was truly a nightmare scenario for that community,” Perry said. “President Obama called from Air Force One as he was en route to Boston… We greatly appreciate his call, and his gracious offer of support, of course, and the quick turnaround of the emergency declaration that will be forthcoming, and his offer of prayers.”
That’s okay, Rick, it’s never to late to change from being a “maker” to a “taker.” If Wall Street can do it, why can’t you? Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds anyway, I’m told.
I absolutely agree that the community around the fertilizer plant explosion is a disaster area. But unlike a hurricane, or forest fire, or tornado, or earthquake, or flood, this disaster has a responsible party – the company that operates the fertilizer plant. After “we the people” help with restoration, it is the company, it insurers, and the state that allowed an dangerous facility to operate near homes and schools that should bear the financial responsibility. And “we the people” should be at the head of the line for repayment from the responsible parties.
I heard there’s no zoning laws in TX, probably explains why the plant was so close to so many homes.
Probably depends on where you live.
Google search of Texas zoning laws
However, as any lawyer can tell you, exceptions to zoning laws/codes are all too easy to acquire.
Exactly — should be plenty of insurance as this incident wouldn’t fall under the “act of god” exclusion.
Well, under PAYGO, we have to cut some federal expenditures in Texas. Closing Fort Hood might balance out the relief expenditures.
yep…no aid unless it’s balanced with cuts -in Texas
Yeah where is Cantor the sociopath?
Shameless.
they their duly elected officials, elected by a majority of their respective populations, protest giving aid to hurricane sandy?
if so, fuck em.
let “libertarian” confederates live or die by the principles they hold everybody else to.
Back when TX had a real Gov
Oh, and do enjoy the great ideas about guns.
